** Wahine Honored **
Angelica Ljungquist was named player of the year, Dave Shoji
coach of the year, and three other UH Wahine players were named
to the All-Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division first
team yesterday. Joining Ljungquist, a 6-2 senior middle blocker,
on the first team are teammates Robyn Ah Mow (setter), Therese
Crawford (outside hitter), and Nalani Yamashita (defensive
specialist). Colorado State's Rainie Rogers and Judy Rexroth and
San Diego State's Martina Vitkova round out the first team.
Hawaii's Joselyn Robins and Cia Goods were named to the second
team.
** Bows Fly Over Jiangsu **
Seven players scored in double figures for Hawaii in their 122-
101 preseason exhibition victory over Jiangsu of China last night
at the Special Events Arena. Leading the way with 18 points was
highly heralded newcomer Anthony Carter, a 6-foot guard with a
40-inch vertical jump. Six of the eight field goals he scored
were slam dunks. "Oh, man, he's a great athlete," said Jiangsu
forward John Spencer. "I haven't seen a guy like that for a long
time." Despite the win, Hawaii appears vulnerable defensively
and on the boards. "We gave up way too much," said UH coach
Riley Wallace. "But the hustle and attitude were there."
** Sumo Day 11 Results **
Yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono and ozeki (champion)
Musashimaru still share the lead of the Kyushu Grand Sumo
Tournament after winning yesterday. Akebono, also known as Chad
Rowan from Waimanalo, overpowered Terao (2-9) to improve to 10-1.
Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) also moved to 10-1
after defeating sekiwake (junior champion) Kaio (8-3). Two other
rikishi, ozeki Wakanohana and maegashira Tochiazuma, are also
8-3. A third Hawaii wrestler, Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of
Nanakuli), dropped to 4-7 following a loss to Daishi (6-5).
** Freitas, Jacobs Didn't Beef **
Witness accounts of the fights in the stands at Saturday night's
UH-BYU football game indicate that neither quarterback Glenn
Freitas nor redshirt running back Quincy Jacobs threw any blows
during the scuffles. Both had entered the stands from the UH
bench area, Jacobs to protect Thea vonAppen, the wife of UH coach
Fred vonAppen, and Freitas to protect members of his family.
While the duo will probably be cleared of any criminal action,
both face possible school-imposed sanctions for leaving the
playing field and entering the spectator area.
** Neighbor Island Title Game Set **
Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea (13-0)
will travel to the Garden Island to face Kauai Interscholastic
Federation champion Waimea (6-1) in the title game of the
Neighbor Island Football Championship on Friday night at Hanapepe
Ball Park. Coached by Tim Lino, the Warriors rolled to their
third consecutive BIIF title this season. They defeated MIL
champion Maui, 21-14, in a first round game last week. Leading
the Waiakea charge in 1996 is quarterback Johnny Young, who
passed for 1,342 yards and rushed for 423 more. Running backs
Chevas Lamoya and Ernie Shim average 9.8 and 7.1 yards per carry,
respectively. Waimea is led by all-around wizard Sean Jardin, a
5-7, 155-pounder who plays running back (190-yard average per
game), defensive back, kick returner, kicker, and punter for Na
Menehune. "He's quite an athlete," said Lino.
** Girls' State Volleyball Tourney On Tap **
Punahou is seeded first, McKinley second, Waiakea third, and
Molokai fourth in the 12-team Hawaii High School Athletic
Association Girls Volleyball Tournament which is set to begin
tomorrow with pool play matches at McKinley and Punahou gyms.
Paced by UH-Wahine-bound Tehani Miyashiro, the Buffanblu are 32-0
this season and are currently ranked third in Mizuno National
High School Poll. Marjorie Nepo is the top player on a talented
McKinley team. Kamehameha, the ILH runner-up, is the defending
state champion.

Much to the disappoint of coach Glennie Adams, Chaminade was not

of the snub.

** Freitas Sorry But Would Do It Again **
Saying he'd do it again if his family were threatened, University
of Hawaii quarterback Glenn Freitas defended leaving the bench
area and entering the stands during the second half of the BYU
game on Saturday night. After reports of the incident appeared
on national TV broadcasts, Freitas also apologized "for the
embarrassment I caused the whole state." Although what spawned
the incident still remains cloudy, it is clear that Freitas left
the Aloha Stadium field, entered the bleacher area behind the
Rainbow bench, and proceeded to a section where his family was
seated. At the time, several fights, including an altercation
involving an unnamed fan and members of Freitas family were
taking place. Freitas denied throwing any blows and making an
obscene gesture at a fan who had been heckling him. Another UH
player, redshirt Quincy Jacobs, also entered the stands and may
have scuffled with a fan. Jacobs was the subject of another
recent UH investigation involving violence. About a month ago,
he and UH basketball player Aaron Curry allegedly assaulted
volleyball player Moses Goods at the university dorms.
Resolution of that incident is pending.
** Sumo Day 10 Results **
With five bouts remaining, Hawaii's Akebono (Chad Rowan of
Waimanalo) and Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) are 9-1
and share the lead of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament at
Fukuoka, Japan. In action last night, Akebono rammed out
Oginishiki (3-7) and Musashimaru defeated Akinoshima (6-4).
Kaio, who had been tied with the duo, fell to 8-2 after losing to
Tosanoumi (5-5). Earlier, Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa
Atisanoe) upped his record to 4-6 with a win over Terao (2-8).
** UH Hoop News **
UH basketball coach Riley Wallace announced that Erin Galloway, a
6-foot-8, skywalking forward will probably sign a letter of
intent to play for the Rainbows. Nicknamed "Helicopter" because
of his 43-inch vertical leap, Galloway played for national JUCO
powerhouse Atlanta Metro College last season. He is expected to
enroll at UH in January and will be eligible to play next fall.
----
Meanwhile, Wallace and his 'Bows will play an exhibition game
against Jiangsu Nanjing of China tonight at the Special Events
Arena. Wallace said he will start Alika Smith and Anthony Carter
at guards, Eric Ambrozich and Mike Robinson at forwards, and Seth
Sundberg in the post. Forward Micah Kroeger and guards Aaron
Curry and Quentin Gallon will be the first off the bench.
** Apo Out at Kamehameha **
Al Apo, who has led the Kamehameha girls to five state basketball
titles in his nine-year tenure, has resigned. He refused to
comment about the reason for his departure. An anonymous source
said Apo was released because he "had not been doing an adequate
job preparing his players to move on to the next level" (college
basketball). Under Apo, the Warrior girls have registered a 205-
43 record and have appeared in eight of the last nine state title
games. A search for his successor is in progress, said
Kamehameha co-athletic director Blane Gaison.
** Prep Football News **
Punahou quarterback Noah King, a starting linebacker for the
Buffanblu in 1995, set an Interscholastic League of Honolulu
single-season record by passing for 2,403 yards. The previous
record was 2,331, set St. Louis' John Hao in 1990. King's primary
target this season has been Tafiti Uso, who also set an ILH mark
with 1,127 yards in receptions. King, Uso and their Punahou
teammates will take on Campbell in the Prep Bowl third-place game
next Friday, Nov. 29, at Aloha Stadium. Ten-time defending ILH
and Prep Bowl champion St. Louis will meet Oahu Interscholastic
Association title winner Waianae in the feature game. The Saints
are ranked 17th in the latest USA Today Top 25 High School
Football Poll.

** Bows Beat Rebels on Aloha Night **
Over 8,000 fans journeyed to the University of Hawaii's Special
Events Arena last night to watch the UH Wahine defeat Nevada-Las
Vegas, 15-2, 15-4, 15-2, and to honor the home team's five soon-
to-be-departing seniors--Angelica Ljungquist, Robyn Ah Mow,
Joselyn Robins, Nalani Yamashita, and Chasity Nobriga. The
match, just 52 minutes in duration, concluded Hawaii's regular
season home schedule. The night was marked by several standing
ovations--one for UNLV coach Deitre Collins, a former Wahine
standout--and the rest for the five seniors. "It's been a great
four years," said Ljungquist, who has set a goal of leading the
Wahine (27-1) to a national title this year. Hawaii will close
out the regular season on the road with matches against San Jose
State on Friday and Fresno State on Saturday.
** Freitas Defending Ohana **
UH quarterback Glenn Freitas was involved in a scuffle with a fan
in the stands at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night while attempting
"to defend his family," said Freitas' brother, Kalani.
Witnesses say that the incident began when a fan yelled
derogatory remarks at the UH signal caller from the section
behind the UH bench. When Freitas' father, sitting in the same
section, confronted the man, a shoving match ensued. In the
subsequent fray, Freitas' mother was shoved, his girlfriend
knocked down, and UH redshirt Quincy Jacobs--while supposedly
acting as peacemaker--was observed throwing several punches.
Freitas actions in the fight aren't clear. Thea vonAppen, the
wife of UH coach Fred vonAppen, suffered a cut lip in the mini-
melee. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said he will gather as
many facts as possible before taking any action.
** Sumo Day 9 Results **
Kaio, Akebono, and Musashimaru remain in a deadlock for the lead
of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament with 9-1 records after each

** Cougars Crush 'Bows **
It was an ugly Saturday night in Halawa. Brigham Young exploded
for 21 points in a minute and a half span in the second half to
put away a determined but outmanned University of Hawaii team,
45-14, in a WAC football game last night at Aloha Stadium. A
crowd of 16,468, several whom were involved in fights near the
game's end, braved rainy, blustery weather to watch the contest.
BYU (11-1) thoroughly dominated the game, outgaining the 'Bows
(2-9) in total yards 466 to 145. But the 10th-ranked Cougars
held just a 24-14 lead with a minute remaining in the third
quarter. That all changed following an unsuccessful Bow onside
kick attempt and two turnovers. In 83 seconds, BYU capitalized
on the Hawaii gamble and miscues by scoring three touchdowns. An
ugly pall hung over the stadium as several fights broke out in
the mauka stands behind the Hawaii bench late in the game. While
acting as a peacemaker, Thea vonAppen, the wife UH head coach
Fred vonAppen, was punched and suffered a cut lip. UH
quarterback Glenn Freitas entered the stands to defend family
members who were allegedly involved in the fracas.
** Aloha Night for Five Wahine Seniors **
Tears are sure to flow tonight at the Special Events Arena when
Hawaii (26-1) takes on Nevada-Las Vegas (5-18). Five members of
the UH Wahine volleyball team--Angelica Ljungquist, Joselyn
Robins, Robyn Ah Mow, Nalani Yamashita, and Chasity Nobriga--will
play the final regular season home match of their careers. The
Wahine are heavy favorites to win tonight and clinch their first-
ever Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division title.
Emotions will also run high when the five seniors and the legion
of fans who have watched them develop bid each other farewell.
** Sumo Day 8 Results **
Yokozuna Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), ozeki Musashimaru

Academy's Matt Stevens, and Punahou's Eri Macdonald. The state
championship meet is scheduled for Friday 11/22 at Hawaii Prep

** OIA Grid Title to Waianae **
On a wet night at Aloha Stadium, Waianae surged past Campbell,
23-3, to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association football
championship. The Seariders will now face Interscholastic League
of Honolulu title winner St. Louis on Nov. 29 at Aloha Stadium in
the 1996 Oahu Prep Bowl. The Crusaders, who closed out their
regular season yesterday by thumping Damien 35-14, will be
seeking their 11th Prep Bowl win in a row. To do so, they'll
have to defeat a typical rush-happy, tough-defending Waianae team
which rallied for 21 second half points to overcome a 3-2
halftime deficit against the Sabers last night. Running back
John Koa (18 carries for 99 yards) and linebacker Stanford
Evaimalo (10-yard interception return for a touchdown) fueled the
Waianae comeback. Campbell will take on ILH runner-up Punahou in
the Prep Bowl 3rd-place game.

** Farewell to Five Wahine Seniors **
Hawaii volleyball fans will bid aloha to five University of
Hawaii seniors on Sunday when the UH Wahine (25-1) take on UNLV
(5-17) at the Special Events Arena in the final home match of the
season. Playing their final regular season matches will be
Angelica Ljungquist, Robyn Ah Mow, Chasity Nobriga, Joselyn
Robins, and Nalani Yamashita. All are starters. Tomorrow night,
Hawaii will face Air Force (4-19) at the SEA.
** VonAppen Wants Rollover **
UH football coach Fred vonAppen says if his contract is not
rolled over by athletic director Hugh Yoshida, the Rainbow
football program is doomed. Currently in the first year of a
three-year pact, vonAppen said a roll-over--a guaranteed
extension beyond the current contract--is needed to demonstrate
how serious the University is about its football program to
potential recruits and UH fans. VonAppen also presented Yoshida
with a 30-item wish list which stipulates what the UH grid boss
feels is necessary to turn the foundering Hawaii football program
turned around. Yoshida is reviewing vonAppen's requests.
** Lehman Leads Slam **
British Open champion Tom Lehman has a one-stroke lead going into
today's nine-hole final round at the Grand Slam of Golf being
played on Kauai at a soggy Poipu Bay Resort Course. Yesterday,
Lehman fired 27-hole total of 8-under 100. Master's champion
Nick Faldo and U.S. Open winner Steve Jones are a stroke back at
101. PGA titlist Mark Brooks is a distant fourth at 109.
** Sumo Day Five Results **
Akebono and Musashimaru won and Konishiki lost on the fifth day
of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament at Fukuoka, Japan. Yokozuna
Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) and ozeki Musashimaru (Fiamalu
Penitani of Waianae) both improved to 4-1 after beating Kaio (4-
1) and Asanosho (1-4), respectively. Maegashira 8 Konishiki
(Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) dropped to 2-3 following a loss to
Kenko (2-3). Maegashira 11 Tochiazuma, at 5-0, is the only
undefeated rikishi.
** Sabers, Seariders Set to Scrap for OIA Title **
Campbell (8-2) will seek its first-ever OIA football championship
when the Sabers take on perennial Oahu public school kingpin
Waianae (8-2) tomorrow night at Aloha Stadium. The Seariders
defeated the Sabers, 20-12, in the regular season. Campbell
coach Darren Hernandez said his team is hobbled by injuries, the
most significant one sustained starting quarterback Kaleopa
Kaleopa (knee strain). If Kaleopa can't play, receiver Kanaloa
Pantastico will get the starting call. Meanwhile, the Seariders
will rely on their vaunted ground game and tough-as-lava-rock
defense to propel them to yet another OIA title. "The
championship is on the line," said Waianae coach Leo Taaca.
"That should motivate our players."
** Cross-Country Title Meets on Saturday **
The OIA and ILH cross country championship meets are set for
Saturday. Public school runners will compete for the Oahu
Interscholastic Association title at Waialua High while the best
of the Oahu's private schools will vie for the Interscholastic
League of Honolulu crown at Mid-Pacific. Pacita Stark
(Roosevelt), Jodi Enomoto (Mililani), and Michael Donaldson
(Roosevelt) are the top runners in the OIA while Punahou's Eri
McDonald and Matt Stevens of Pac-Five are heavy favorites in the
ILH.

** Ho Excels at Xcel **
An old-timer at 39, Michael Ho shook off the cobwebs to defeat a
posse of youngsters at the Xcel Pro meet in 6- to 8-foot surf
yesterday at a rain-drenched Sunset Beach. "Luck had a lot to
do with it," said Ho, who no longer competes on the world pro
tour. "These kids coming up now are really good surfers." Ho,
who pocketed $2,500 for the win, topped Kauai's Rueben Balmores,
Australia's Mark Occhilupo, and Florida's Todd Holland in the
final round. Heavy rainshowers hampered contestants' ability to
see incoming waves.
** Sumo Day 4 Results **
Ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) dropped a match
off the lead after losing to lower-ranked Tosanoumi (2-2) on the
fourth day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament being held at
Fukuoka, Japan. Musashimaru is now 3-1. Also at 3-1 is grand
champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), who forced out
Daishoho (1-3). Tochiazuma, Kaio, and Takatoriki remain unbeaten
at 4-0. In an earlier match, Konishiki improved to 2-2 by
topping previously unbeaten Tamakasuga (3-1).
** Bows Hit Klum **
Rain forced the UH football team (2-8) indoors yesterday as the
Rainbows prepare for Saturday night's Aloha Stadium match-up
against Brigham Young (10-1). The 'Bows normally practice on the
large grass field in the UH quarry but heavy showers throughout
the day turned that venue into a quagmire. UH coach Fred
vonAppen also ruled out Cooke Field as a practice site because
large ponds of water had accumulated there. So it was off to
ancient Klum Gym for vonAppen and the Rainbows. "We got more
accomplished than if we had practiced in the rain," said running
back Carlos Shaw. Quarterback Glenn Freitas had a different
view, saying "We should have been outdoors like real men,
practicing in the mud and getting all dirty."
** Bows Hope to Sign Top Prospect **
Sources close to the UH men's basketball program believe the
Rainbows are leading in the race to sign top prospect Erin
Galloway, a 6-foot-8 forward from Atlanta Metropolitan (junior)
College. Galloway, who has a 42-inch vertical jump, says he has
narrowed down his choices to Hawaii, Maryland, Memphis State,
Miami, and Boston College. NCAA recruits can sign letters of
intent beginning today. Meanwhile, the Rainbows are preparing
for an exhibition match against Jiangsu Nanjing of China next
Tuesday at the Special Events Arena.

** Grudge Game for Chow? **
Although he calls the upcoming UH-BYU contest "just another
game," it's likely that BYU offensive coordinator Norm Chow would
like nothing better than to have his Cougars (10-1) blow the
Rainbows (2-8) out of Aloha Stadium this Saturday night. Chow,
born and raised in Hawaii and a candidate for the UH head
coaching job that went to Fred von Appen, has openly criticized
how UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida handled the application
process. "If I wasn't going to be considered, then why go
through the motions?" asked Chow. "Why waste my time? That's
what bothered me." Said BYU quarterback Steve Sarkisian, "We
want to perform well for him and show Hawaii what it missed."
----
On a related front, Hawaii's top high school football recruits
are probably mainland- rather than Manoa-bound. Punahou
offensive lineman Mike Souza, perhaps the state's most coveted
prep prospect, has narrowed down his choices to five, none of
which is UH. St. Louis defensive back Wes Tufaga, being
recruited by Utah, Colorado, and UCLA, said, "Nobody (at St.
Louis) wants to go (to UH)." He cited academic problems
encountered by UH players as a major concern.
** Sumo Day 2 Results **
Two Hawaii rikishi won and a third lost on the second day of the
Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in Japan. Grand champion Akebono
(Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) rebounded from an opening night upset
to force out Kotonowaka. Earlier, ozeki (champion) Musashimaru
(Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) improved to 2-0 by shoving out
Daishoho while maegashira 9 Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of
Nanakuli) dropped to 1-1 after losing to Kyokushuzan. Grand
champion Takanohana is sitting out the tournament because of
severe case of stomach flu.
** Kapalua Title to Stankowski **
Paul Stankowski, a former college All-American for Texas-El Paso,
fired a tournament record 21-under 269 to win the Kapalua
International yesterday at a windswept Kapalua Plantation course
on Maui. The victory was his third of the year. Stankowski, who
pocketed $216,000 for the triumph, edged Fred Couples, who earned
$130,000, by a single stroke. Davis Love and Steve Jones, each
earning $66,625, finished two strokes back.
** Top Seed to Buffanblu **
ILH champion and defending state title winner Punahou has been

divided into four pools with the top two teams from each pool
advancing to single elimination play.

** Bows Blasted **
Long faces reigned supreme at Aloha Stadium last night as the
University of Hawaii football team lost to San Jose State 38-17.
A crowd of 23,916 was on hand. The homecoming game defeat
dropped the Rainbows to 2-8 on the season with two games
remaining. The Spartans, entering the contest with the second
worst defense statistically in the NCAA, improved to 2-8. "This
is so frustrating," said UH quarterback Glenn Freitas. "We made
all these mistakes that were correctable..that should have been

** Wahine Tame Cowgirls **
Playing much better than the night before, the UH Wahine
volleyball team swept Wyoming, 15-10, 15-7, 15-3, in a Western

Hawaii, which struggled to beat Colorado State on Friday,

** Kyushu Tourney Commences **
Akebono's chances for winning the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament
were dimmed a bit after the Hawaii-born grand champion, also
known as Chad Rowan of Waimanalo, was defeated by Musoyama in an
opening night bout. Grand champion Takanohana, the winner of the
last four tournaments, announced that he will sit out this
tourney because of a severe case of stomach flu. Meanwhile, two
other Hawaii rikishi were victorious. Ozeki Musashimaru

Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) topped Kotoryu.
** Net Titles to Pearl City, McKinley, Punahou **
The Pearl City boys and the McKinley and Punahou girls won league

past Waianae, 9-15, 15-6, 15-5, to claim the OIA girls' crown.
Both matches were played at Blaisdell Arena. Meanwhile, at Mid-
Pacific gym, Punahou topped Kamehameha, 15-7, 15-11, to win the

** Campbell Advances to Final **
Down 9-0 at the half, No. 4 Campbell turned up the intensity in
the second half to defeat No. 8 McKinley, 20-15, in an Oahu
Interscholastic Association football playoff semifinal clash last
night at a rain-drenched Aloha Stadium. Quarterback Kaleopa
Kaleopa passed for 236 yards, including touchdowns strikes of 14
and 23 yards to Marc Acidera and 83 yards to Clifford Russell, to
lead the Sabers to their first-ever appearance in an OIA title

winner of tonight's Waianae/Waipahu semifinal.
** Kalima on Doorstep **
Waimanalo native George Kalima, 26, known in Japan's sumo circles
as Yamato, can earn a spot in the sport's top division by winning
the majority of his 15 matches in the Kyushu Basho that begins
this weekend in Fukuoka, Japan. Kalima, a 6-2, 415-pounder, is
currently ranked as juryo 1, the top position in sumo's second
highest division. If he wins eight or more matches in the coming
tournament, Kalima will likely be promoted to the makuuchi
division, the home of sumo's top 40 performers, including grand
champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), champion Musashimaru
(Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), and senior wrestler Konishiki
(Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe).

tomorrow at Laramie, Wyoming in Western Athletic Conference
volleyball matches. UH coach Dave Shoji said this week in

"I feel we have a better sense of where we are, a little more
direction," said Shoji.

Triplett and Mike Hulbert are another stroke back. Taking
advantage of unusually light winds on the course, 47 of the 56
players entered in the tournament broke par. "The golf course
was a sitting duck today," said Gilder. The tournament continues

** Yoshida's Action Criticized **
UH volleyball player Moses Goods and his sisters, Kathy and Cia,

could resume practicing with their teams after being suspended
for their part in the fight. The two had agreed to enroll in
anger management and sexual-harassment classes and to devote time
to community service projects. "For these men to be re-instated
is entirely unacceptable," said Kathy Goods, who said her family
will continue to pursue the matter through the police. Yoshida
said he had examined evidence related to the altercation and felt
his decision was just.

(19-2) moved up two notches to No. 2 while Florida State (25-1),

volleyball team, intervened and a scuffle ensued, leaving Moses
Goods with facial injuries. Goods pressed charges but no arrests
were made. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said Curry and
Jacobs have agreed to complete community service projects, to

** Lackluster Win for Wahine **
Perhaps with tonight's match against No. 4 Stanford hovering in
their minds, the UH Wahine looked less than their usually
invincible selves in a 15-7, 15-4, 13-15, 15-6 Western Athletic
Conference triumph over Utah last night at the Special Events
Arena (attendance 6,444). Hawaii coach Dave Shoji, sensing the
match was under control, sat down all his starters except middle
blocker Angelica Ljungquist in the third game. The result wasn't
pretty, the Wahine losing that game 13-15. "This was a good
opportunity to get our young players some playing time," said
Shoji. "They're not going to get a lot of it down the stretch."
Shoji reinserted his starters in game four, ending any Ute hopes
of a comeback. Top-ranked Hawaii (23-0) now can focus its
attention on tonight's match against fourth-ranked Stanford
(18-2), the NCCA women's volleyball champions in two of the last
four seasons. "I hope we're not overprepared for them," said
Shoji.
** Quarterfinal Wins for Tigers, Sabers **
McKinley and Campbell will meet in an Oahu Interscholastic
Association football playoff semifinal next week after winning
quarterfinal games last night at a rainy Aloha Stadium. McKinley
and Farrington played to a 13-all tie at the end of regulation,
and the Tigers were declared the victors after outgaining the
Governors 20-yards to zero in a 4-down winner-take-all tie-
breaker. McKinley (6-2) rallied for the win after trailing 10-0
at the half. A battalion of police officers patrolled in- and
outside of the stadium to squelch gang fights rumored to take
place. No incidents were reported. In the nightcap game,
Campbell jumped out to a 20-0 first quarter lead and then held
off Castle for a 36-20 win. Clifford Russell darted for 161
rushing yards to propel the Sabers. Waianae and Waipahu will do

** Seariders, Marauders Advance **
Waianae crushed Kaiser, 35-0, and Waipahu edged Leilehua, 14-7,
in Oahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinal football playoff
games last night at Aloha Stadium. The Seariders (7-0) and
Marauders (4-3) will now meet in a semifinal matchup on Nov. 8 at
Aloha Stadium. Playing before a crowd of 2,985 last night,
Waianae surged to victory, using its powerful running attack to
amass 290 rushing yards. Searider defenders limited the Cougars
(7-1) to just 89 yards in total offense. In the second game, the
Marauders, normally a pass-oriented team, used a more balanced
attack and a fourth quarter goal line stand to hold off the hard-
battling Mules (6-2). OIA playoff action continues tonight with
Campbell squaring off against Castle and Farrington taking on
McKinley.

The top-ranked UH Wahine volleyball team will try not to look
past tonight's foe, Utah, in preparation for tomorrow's showdown
with No. 4 Stanford. The Wahine (22-0) will face the Utes (14-9)
tonight at the Special Events Arena. Despite the looming battle
with the Cardinal (18-2), UH coach Dave Shoji emphasized the
importance of the Utah game. "The more important match is in the
WAC," said Shoji. "We have to get past that before we think
about Stanford."
** Seasiders Sweep 'Swords **
The talented BYU-Hawaii Seasider Wahine volleyball team swept
cross-island rival Chaminade, 15-7, 15-11, 15-10, in a women's
small college match last night at McCabe Gym. Daniela Carneiro
pounded 17 kills and Ana Alves and Arlette Silva added 13 apiece
for BYUH. The match was the final one of the regular season for
the Seasiders, the NAIA's top-ranked team, and it marked the
first time BYUH (23-0) has ever gone undefeated in the regular
season. Chaminade dropped to 17-9.
** Rainbow Basketball News **
UH basketball coach Riley Wallace may have to scramble to find a
replacement opening round opponent for next month's Rainbow
Classic if an NCAA ruling is upheld. Hawaii is scheduled to meet
Northwestern in an ESPN-2-televised first round game of the
Rainbow Classic on Dec. 27. However, a new NCAA rule prohibits
exempt tournaments like the Rainbow Classic from inviting two
teams from the same conference. Michigan, a Big 10 team like
Northwestern, is also entered in the Rainbow Classic. Wallace
has requested that the rule be waived because of its 11th hour
nature and because finding a replacement opponent would be
difficult.

** Mid-Pack Placing Predicted for B-ball Bows **
The dawn of the 1996-97 college basketball season is nearing, and
the UH Wahine have been picked to finish third and the UH men
fifth in their respective Western Athletic Conference divisions.
"Third place is a nice place to be," said Wahine coach Vince Goo,
whose team will compete in the WAC for the first time after years
of playing in the Big West Conference. Basketball writers and
broadcasters tabbed Colorado State and San Diego State as the No.
1 and No. 2 picks, respectively. UH men's coach Riley Wallace
wasn't concerned about his team's middle-of-the-road position.
"Predictions don't mean anything," he said. "We've been anywhere
from third to sixth in the past and done well."
** Wahine Host Utes, Cardinal This Weekend **
The top-ranked UH Wahine volleyball team (22-0) will put its
unbeaten record on the line this weekend with matches against
unranked Utah (14-9) on Friday and No. 4 Stanford (17-2) on
Saturday. Both matches will be played at the Special Events
Arena. The showdown with the Cardinal on Saturday is a sellout.
UH coach Dave Shoji, the owner of a 612-121 career record
entering the weekend, said he is pleased that four local players-
-Joselyn Robins, Chasity Nobriga, Robyn Ah Mow, and Nalani
Yamashita--are in the Wahine's starting lineup. "We've taken
some players that no Top 20-type teams would have taken and just
developed them," he said. "That's what I'm proud of." Angelica
Ljungquist (Sweden) and Therese Crawford (Michigan) round out
Hawaii's starting six.
** Ex-Bow Johnson Visits **
Former UH baseball pitcher Mark Johnson, escaping from the cold
of his native Ohio, has returned to Honolulu to work out in the
island's warm climate. The Houston Astros made Johnson the 19th
overall pick in this summer's amateur draft. He signed a
contract worth $750,000 with the club. Johnson said he will be
working out here with former Rainbow teammates Paul Ah Yat and
Jason Ross, who also have entered the pro ranks.
** Alexio to Battle Cureton **
World heavyweight kickboxing champion Dennis Alexio (63-1) will
face Larry "Thunderfoot" Cureton (41-4) on Saturday night at
Blaisdell Arena. The two have already met, Alexio defeating
Cureton with a sixth-round TKO five years ago in California. The
240-pound Cureton said he wasn't at full strength when he lost to
Alexio (205 pounds) and looks forward to the rematch. "I feel
like I'm 100 percent for this fight," he said.

** Wallace: "We'll be good." **
Despite losing its top three players, the University of Hawaii
men's basketball team may be better than last year, according to
coach Riley Wallace. Gone are last season's big three--Justice
Sueing, Tes Whitlock, and Anthony Harris--but Wallace, addressing
the media at the Western Athletic Conference Basketball Media
Meetings in Las Vegas yesterday, said he has a good feeling about
this year's squad. "They're a cohesive unit. There are no big
egos. They know how to work together," he said. Newcomer Anthony
Carter (point guard) is being heralded as the Rainbows' main-man
this season. Other players Wallace mentioned are returnees Alika
Smith (off-guard), Eric Ambrozich (power forward), Seth Sundberg
(center), and newcomer Michael Robinson (small forward).
** Miyashiro Commits to Wahine **
Punahou senior Tehani Miyashiro, probably the best female high
school volleyball player in Hawaii this year, has verbally
committed to attend the University of Hawaii and play for the UH
Wahine next season. Along with all other high school seniors,
she will have to wait until February to sign a national letter of
intent. A 5-8 outside hitter, Miyashiro is the star of an
undefeated Punahou team favored to win the Hawaii high school
state title this season. UH coach Dave Shoji said Miyashiro is
talented enough to play a number of positions as a Wahine,
including setter, defensive specialist, and outside hitter. With
five seniors in this season's starting lineup, Shoji will have
many open slots on next season's roster. Miyashiro will fill one
of them along with two other players who have also made verbal
commitments--Jamelka Stevens, a 5-11 outsider hitter from River
Ridge High in Olympia, Wash. and Jessica Sudduth, a 6-2 middle
blocker and two-time Junior Olympic All-American.
