The Rainbows (5-4 overall and 3-3 MPSF) served for the match twice in the fourth game but could not put away the Gauchos (). Jason Ring and Aaron Wilton had 38 and 27 kills, respectively, for Hawaii. ---- Oregon State battered the UH baseball team, 14-4, last night at Rainbow Stadium. The Beavers (1-0) used a nine-run outburst in the top of the eighth to break open a 5-4 game. Hawaii dropped to 2-9. Robert Medeiros had two of the Rainbows' six hits. ---- The UH Wahine softball team ripped BYU-Hawaii, 17-1, yesterday afternoon at the Wahine Softball Stadium. The game was the season-opener for both teams. Kehau Cofran had four hits in as many at bats to spark Na Wahine. ---- Nani Cockett and Riley Wallace were named the sportspersons of the month for January by the Honolulu Quarterback Club. Cockett averaged 20-plus points to lead the UH Wahine basketball team to a 7-1 record in January while Wallace coached the Rainbow men's basketball team to its second best start in UH history. ---- Pinsoom Tenzing has been named the full-time women's soccer coach for UH. Tenzing, a native of India, has coached the Wahine club team for the past three years, compiling a 14-33-4 record. ---- The UH men's basketball team (15-4 overall, 7-2 WAC) will take on Air Force (5-14, 1-9) in a WAC game tonight at the Special Events Arena. The Falcons upset the Rainbows earlier this season. ** Sports Shorts ** Hawaii Pacific defeated BYU-Hawaii, 84-67, in a men's small college basketball game last night at Cannon Activities Center. Entering the game the Sea Warriors (20-2) were ranked 2nd in the NAIA and the Seasiders (18-4) 11th. ---- The UH-Hilo baseball team swept a doubleheader from Hawaii Pacific yesterday in Hilo. The Vulcans won the first game, 10-3, and the second, 9-3. ---- The OIA boys' basketball playoffs continue tonight with four quarterfinal games: Aiea vs Kaiser, Kalaheo vs Campbell, Kahuku vs Waipahu, and Moanalua vs Radford. The winners will earn state tournament berths. ---- The OIA soccer championship will be settled tonight at Pearl City with Mililani taking on Kalaheo for the boys' crown and Pearl City facing Kaiser for the girls'. ---- Mililani won both the boys' and girls' titles at the OIA Western Division Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at Pearl City Recreation Center. ** Oahu Surf Report ** North shore: 8 to 12 feet South shore: 1 to 3 feet

The Rainbows led by seven with a minute to play and barely hung on for the win. UNLV's Jermaine Smith missed a layup a split second before the final buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime. "That thing was just sitting there," said UH forward Micah Kroeger of Smith's final shot. "I was begging for it to fall off." Anthony Carter (16), Alika Smith (21) and Seth Sundberg (12) scored in double figures for Hawaii (15-4 overall and 7-2 WAC). Sundberg added 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. UNLV dropped to 13-7 and 5-4. ** Wahine Romp ** The UH Wahine crushed UNLV, 72-46, in a WAC women's basketball game last night in Las Vegas. Nani Cockett scored 18 points and handcuffed the Rebels' leading scorer, Tody Girard, holding her to just six points. BJ Itoman (14), Kendis Leeburg (13), and Raylene Howard (12) also scored in double figures for Na Wahine (16-4 overall and 9-1 WAC). "Compared to how we were on the road trip, this was a quantum leap into the land of lucidity," quipped UH coach Mike Wilton after the match. Jason Ring slammed 19 kills for the 'Bows (5-3). Hawaii's Israel connection, Naveh Milo and Sivan Leoni, added 14 apiece. The teams will meet again tomorrow night in a match that will count in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings. ** Na Wahine Sign Three ** Getting "the three people we wanted the most," is how UH Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji described his 1997 recruiting campaign. The newest Na Wahine, all outside hitters and all members of Volleyball Magazine's Fab 50, are Punahou's Tehani Miyashiro (5-7), Jessica Sudduth (6-2), and Jameka Stevens (5- 11). Sudduth is from California and Stevens from Washington. "These three will be able to step in, if not next year, the year after," said Shoji. ** Trojans Top Seeded ** OIA champion Mililani (11-2) is ranked first for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Softball Tournament slated to run Feb. 12-15 at Roosevelt High. Seeded second through fourth, respectively, are ILH champion Sacred Hearts (14-2), MIL champ Lahainaluna (11-1), and BIIF winner Hilo (8-1). The specific violation and the length of the trio's suspension was not revealed in a university press release yesterday. What's more, neither the suspended players nor UH officials would comment about the specifics of the matter. "I feel sad for them a little bit," said Anthony Carter, the Rainbows' top player. "We have to stay focused on the season." Curry, Gallon and Anderson are not expected to suit up for Hawaii's games against Nevada-Las Vegas tomorrow and Air Force on Saturday. The duo, along with a handful of other high school seniors, can make good on their word to attend UH today, the first day prepsters can sign national letters of intent. Leverenz, a 6-4, 290 pound offensive lineman, led the Rams to winning seasons the past two years. Boys' Basketball: Kapaa's boys basketball team is 6-0. The tightest game this year was 18 points. They have won by a 97-49 score. They are champs and going to states this month. The players to watch are Kawaihau Torio and Brent Inoye. ---- Girls' soccer: Kapaa's girls are 5-0 with only one goal scored on all year. They are big time contenders for the state championship, I think they will pull it off. They are also going to states this month and they are led by Andrea Alflier, Arlene Devit and Cristy Marti who just came back from Iolani because she didn't like the atmosphere. ---- Boys' soccer: There was a three way 2-2 tie record between all the schools. But last weeks Waimea beat Kauai 4-2 with the help of Sean Jardin's two goals. Jardin is the best player for Waimea, but he broke his leg in that game and now is lost for the season. Last night Kapaa beat Waimea 4-1 with goals from Jake Youn, Matt Tinder, Matias Garcia and Squanto Nakagoshi. Garcia, Nick Hill (2) and John Lopez had the assist's for the Warriors. Now the Warriors control their own destiny, with a win on Saturday they will be champions and will go on to the state tournament. A loss by Kapaa will make a three way tie, at 3-3 records. If there is a tie, there will be a playoff. Don't look forward to a Kapaa loss because they look to be healthy and ready for Kauai, so look forward to Kapaa going to the state tournament. Entering the series, the biggest question mark for the 'Bows is their pitching corps, pounded hard by the Bruins. Making matters worse is that Hawaii's top pitcher, Andrew McNally, may miss the Bruin series because of pulled groin muscle. McNally, who pitched for the Australian Olympic team last year and packed on 20 pounds of muscle via an off-season weightlifting and running regimen, was the only starting pitcher who hurled effectively against UCLA last week. Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) won to improve to 7-4 while Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima) lost, falling to 4-7. ** Harrington Passes Away ** Farrington grad and former local boxing great Stan Harrington, 63, died on Sunday in Orlando, Fla., where he had been living in retirement. Harrington compiled a 64-18-3 mark in the ring and was the big draw for local fight fans in the late 50s through the mid-60s, notching wins over, among others, the Hurricane Kid and Sugar Ray Robinson. "He was a savior for boxing back then," said former Hawaii boxing official Bobby Lee. Harrington is survived by his wife, Dianne, eight children, 19 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He said he accepted the position with FSU two weeks ago but held off announcing the job switch so as not to hinder UH's recruiting efforts. Former Kaiser High, UH and NFL player Rich Miano is being mentioned as a possible candidate for Miles' job. "I'm interested in sitting down and seeing what it entails," Miano said. ** Utes Grab More Local Gridders ** Punahou receiver Tafiti Uso, the Honolulu Advertiser's 1996 High School Offensive Player of the Year, and Kahuku lineman Maake Kemoeatu have verbally committed to play for Utah next season. About a month ago, St. Louis High safety Wes Tufaga, the state's Defensive Player of the Year, also committed to the Utes. The trio, who will have to wait until next month to sign letters of intent, will join a host of former local prep stars at Utah, including quarterback Darnell Arceneaux and running back Chris Fuamatu-Maafala from St. Louis, linebackers Kautai Olevao from Kahuku and Taulia Lave from Waianae, and receiver Donny Utu from Punahou. ** Francis Sacked by KGMB ** Yesterday, former Kailua High and NFL player Russ Francis was fired as news director and sports anchor by KGMB-TV. Francis, 43, had been hired by the station a year ago to help boost sagging ratings. After completing his NFL career and prior to his KGMB stint, Francis worked for KUGN Radio in Eugene, Oregon, ESPN, and ABC-TV. Meanwhile, far away in Laramie, Wyoming, Nani Cockett scored seven of Na Wahine's 12 points in overtime to lead Hawaii past the Cowgirls, 81-78. With the wins, the men improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the WAC and the Wahine to 12-3 and 5-1. ** 'Bows Drop Two to 'Canes ** At Rainbow Stadium, the University of Hawaii baseball team dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked Miami of Florida, 10-7 on Saturday and 13-11 yesterday. The victories gave the Hurricanes a 3-1 sweep of the season-opening four-game series. UH dropped to 1-3. Miami parlayed four walks, a single and a double into four runs in top of the seventh to break a 7-all tie. The game took four hours to complete and included 25 walks and seven errors. Both teams are 1-1.
