** NAIA Crown to BYUH Wahine **
With two days of competition still remaining, the BYU-Hawaii
women's tennis team clinched the NAIA National Championship title
yesterday at Tulsa, Okla. The Seasiders have an 11-point lead
heading into today's semifinals and cannot be overtaken no matter
the results. Three BYUH players have qualified for the singles
final four and two duos for the doubles semifinals. "I think our
players will be relaxed now that the team title is wrapped up,"
said BYUH coach Dave Porter, "so I hope they just out and have
fun and maybe win another title or two." In the men's team
competition, BYUH is in sixth place and Hawaii Pacific in 13th.
** Sumo Day 13 Report **
In a showdown of rikishi from Hawaii, grand champion Akebono
(Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) bested champion Musashimaru (Fiamalu
Penitani of Waianae) on day 13 of the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo
Tournament. Akebono is now 11-2 and Musashimaru 9-4. Grand
champion Takanohana leads the tournament with a 12-1 mark. In
earlier action, Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) improved
to 8-5 by forcing out Kotoryu, and Yamato (George Kalima of
Waimanalo) upped his record to 6-7 by defeating Kenko.
** State Baseball Tourney **
Maui defeated Pearl City, 8-2, and Punahou edged Hilo, 5-3, in
quarterfinal games of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association
Baseball Tournament last night at Aloha Stadium. Quarterfinal
games between Kaiser and Mililani and Iolani and Kauai were
postponed because of rain and will be played today, weather
permitting. Semifinal matchups are scheduled for this evening.
** State Girls Basketball Tournament **
Three Oahu teams and one from the Big Island advanced to the
Final Four of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls'
Basketball Tournament tonight in Hilo. In quarterfinal action
last night, top-seeded and undefeated Honokaa broke open a close
game against University High with a 22-6 fourth quarter to notch
a 48-31 win. In other games, No. 2 Punahou buried Kapaa, 66-40,
No. 3 McKinley beat Waiakea, 56-48, and Kalaheo upset No. 4
Lahainaluna, 63-48. In tonight's matchups, Honokaa will take on
Kalaheo, and Punahou will face McKinley.
** All-State Surfing Team Named **
The *Honolulu Advertiser* announced its 1997 All-State Surfing
Team today with Mikala Jones, Melanie Bartels, Eugene Texeira,
and Lei Seto-Mook capturing top honors. Jones, a home school
senior, and Bartels, a freshman at Waianae High, were named male
and female surfers of the year, respectively. In the
bodyboarding category, Texeira, a Kailua High junior, and Seto-
Mook, a senior at Kamehameha, captured the top male and female

** Sumo Day 12 Report **
After 12 days, grand champion Takanohana maintained his lead in
the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. He improved to 11-1
after defeating a hard-fighting Tosanoumi (8-4). Hawaii's Chad
Rowan, known in sumo circles as grand champion Akebono, is in
second place at 10-2. He ousted Akinoshima (5-7) yesterday.
Three other rikishi with Hawaii ties are also competing in the
tournament. Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) is 9-3,
Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) is 7-5, and Yamato
(Waimanalo's George Kalima) is 5-7.
** State Baseball Tourney Opens **
Kaiser, Punahou, Pearl City, and Kauai High all were first-round
winners at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association State
Baseball Tournament yesterday at Aloha Stadium. Kaiser (23-6-1)
rapped out 14 hits to outscore Molokai (21-4), 10-8. In other
games, Punahou (22-12) nipped Castle (20-8), 5-4, Pearl City (19-
7) shut out Waiakea (14-5), 5-0, and Kauai (16-3) ripped Kalani
(11-14-1), 10-2. The tournament continues today at Aloha Stadium
with four quarterfinal games. Hilo will take on Punahou at 11:30
a.m., Maui will square off against Pearl City at 2, Mililani will
meet Kaiser at 4:30, and top-seeded Iolani will face Kauai at 7.
** State Girls' Hoop Tourney **
While the boys are vying for baseball supremacy on Oahu, twelve
girls teams are competing for high school basketball bragging
rights at the Hilo civic on the Big Island. In first round games
last night, Kapaa topped Waipahu, 53-40, University High
outscored Campbell, 64-46, Kalaheo edged Konawaena, 46-43, and
Waiakea pounded Baldwin, 70-39. In today's quarterfinals, No. 4
Lahainaluna will meet Kalaheo, No. 2 Punahou will take on Kapaa,
No. 3 McKinley challenges Waiakea, and No. 1 Honokaa will face
University.
** Sports Shorts **
The BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team is in first place after three
days of competition at the NAIA National Championship Tournament
being held at Tulsa, Okla. The Seasiders have amassed 33 team
points. Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) is in second with 30. The
tournament concludes on Saturday.

The fourth annual Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree will be held
on May 31 at Iolani School. The event includes exhibition games
between youth teams and a mini-tournament involving two high
school all-star teams and two teams composed of former college
players.

** AA Honors for Ringor, Schoales **
Hawaii Pacific's Michele Ringor, a senior outfielder, and Susie
Schoales, a freshman pitcher, were named to the NAIA Softball
All-America first team yesterday. Ringor, who batted .366 and
knocked in 36 runs this season, is a first-teamer for the second
straight year. She is from Camarillo, Calif. Schoales, a
resident of Cerritos, Calif., was the Sea Warriors' top hurler
this season, compiling a 20-4 record and an ERA of 0.91. Three
other HPU players were also honored. Sophomore shortstop Lynette
Williams and junior first baseman Felisa Pascua were honorable
mention selections, and junior utility player Kim Ishihara earned
a spot on the Scholar-Athlete All America team.
** Sumo Day 10 Report **
Two Hawaii rikishi won and two lost on Day 10 of the Tokyo Sumo
Grand Sumo Tournament. The winners were yokozuna (grand
champion) Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo), who overpowered
Tosamoumi, and ozeki (champion) Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of
Waianae), who beat Tamakasuga. Losing yesterday were maegashira
(senior wrestlers) Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) and
Yamato (George Kalima of Waimanalo). Akebono is 8-2, Musashimaru
7-3, Konishiki 6-4, and Yamato 4-6. Grand champion Takanohana
leads the tournament with a 9-1 mark.
** Two Former Prep Gridders Recovering **
Former local prep football standouts Vae Tata of St. Louis High
('94) and Billy Pieper of Kamehameha ('96), both now playing for
UCLA, are recovering from injuries suffered in an auto accident
two weeks ago in Southern California. Tata, who suffered serious
injuries including a shattered pelvis, is under investigation for
driving while intoxicated. Because of the injuries, Tata is not
expected to play in the coming season, according to a UCLA
spokesperson. Pieper broke bones in his leg, ankle, and foot and
is expected to recover and play in the fall.

** Molokai Titles to Gardiner, Fey **
Australia's Dean Gardiner and Honolulu's Kelly Fey paddled to
victories in yesterday's Molokai Challenge, a 32-mile solo kayak
and canoe race from the west end of Molokai to Koko Marina on
Oahu. Gardiner, the winner of five of the last six channel
crossings, took first-to-finish honors with a time of 3 hours, 21
minutes, 26 seconds while the three-time defending wahine champ
Fey stroked across the line in 4:02:47. Both were record times.
Also breaking records were Oahu's Mark Rigg (4:14:52) and Donna
Kahakai (5:16:29) in the solo canoe competition.

Punahou captured the boys' title and Mililani the girls' at the
Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Tennis
Championships on Saturday at the Mauna Lani Bay Bungalows Racquet
Club and Tennis Gardens on the Big Island. Lahainaluna's Malino
Oda drubbed Punahou's Mike Bruggemann, 6-2, 6-1, for the boys'
singles title while Mililani's Erin Hoe defeated Leilehua's Stacy
Hakikawa, 6-1, 6-4, in the girls' final. Doubles titles went to
Kamehameha's Tevai Worthington and Tani Yuen (girls) and
Punahou's Chris Ma and Jesse Paer.
** Baseball, Girl's Basketball Tourneys This Week **
Iolani and Honokaa have been seeded first in the respective
Hawaii High School Athletic Association baseball and girls'
basketball state tournaments this week. In the baseball
tournament that starts Wednesday at Aloha Stadium, the ILH and
defending state champion Raiders have earned opening round byes
along with OIA champ Mililani, BIIF winner Hilo, and MIL champion
Maui High. The girls' hoop tournament also starts on Wednesday
at Afook-Chinen Center in Hilo with Honokaa seeded first, Punahou
second, McKinley third, and Lahainaluna fourth.

** Carey Admits Guilt **
UH quarterback Tim Carey pleaded no contest to gambling charges
yesterday in District Court. The Rainbow signal-caller and ten
other people were arrested last Saturday for playing dice at a
Chinatown location. As punishment, Judge Norman Lewis ordered
Carey to make a $200 contribution to the state's general fund and
said if Carey stays out of trouble in the next twelve months, the
charges will be dismissed. Questioned by reporters after the
trial, Carey was apologetic, saying he had used "poor judgment."
"He made a mistake and he accepted responsibility for it," said
UH coach Fred vonAppen. "It's time to move on from this."
Sanctions by the University of Hawaii are pending.
** HPU Wins Opener **
Jarnett Lono's two-run single in the top of the tenth propelled
Hawaii Pacific past St. Francis of Illinois, 3-1, in a first
round game of the NAIA National Softball Tournament being played
at Decatur, Alabama. The Sea Warriors (47-6) are ranked No. 1 in
the country and are the 16-team tournament's top seed. "It was
good to come away with a win in a game like this," said HPU coach
Howard Okita, whose team will take on eighth-seeded William Woods
(Mo.) this afternoon (1pm HST). Lynette Williams went 4-for-5
and Lono and Star Perry paired hits to contribute to yesterday's
win.

Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. The winners were grand
champion Akebono (4-1), who defeated Asanosho, and champion
Musashimaru (3-2), who topped Tochinowaka. Losing were senior
wrestlers Konishiki (2-3) and Yamato (1-4). Kaio, Oginishiki,
and Asahiyutaka are tied for the tourney lead with
5-0 marks. Grand champion Takanohana is 4-1.
** Prep Tennis Tourney Starts Today **
The 40th Hawaii High School Athletic Association Tennis
Championships begin today at the Mauna Lani Racquet Club and
Mauna Lani Bay Tennis Garden on the Big Island. Six-time
defending champion Punahou is a heavy favorite to win the boys'
team title while Kamehameha--the winner of the last three girls'
crowns--Punahou, Mililani and Baldwin are expected to battle for
the wahine top prize. In singles competition, Kamehameha's Keawe
Ayau and Lahainaluna's Malino Oda are the respective girls' and
boys' top seeds.
** Alexio to Say Aloha **
World heavyweight kickboxing champion Dennis Alexio (64-1) said
he will fight his final bout in Hawaii on May 31 against
Barrington Patterson (36-1) . Alexio, 38, cited his age and
offers to appear in Hollywood films as reasons for his retirement
from the Hawaii ring. "I think I'm just ready to move on," said
Alexio. He mentioned that one final big-payday pay-per-view
fight on the mainland may be in the works.
** Sports Shorts **
Harold "Chuck" Furtado is the new boys' basketball coach at
Konawaena High School. A mortgage broker by day and a former
Hilo High player, Furtado has served as an assistant for the
Wildcats the last 11 years. He replaces Llewellyn Fukui, who
stepped down because of commitments to his job as a police
detective.

Rookie of the year honors were bestowed upon Kaneohe's Dean
Wilson after he finished 11th in earnings on the Asian Golf Tour
this year. A Castle High and BYU grad, Wilson earned $50,443.98
this year on the tour.

Hawaii surfers Shane Dorian, Kalani Robb, Sunny Garcia, Derek Ho,
and Ross Williams advanced to the third round of the Tokushima
Pro at Ikumi Beach, Japan yesterday. Eliminated were John
Shimooka, Kaipo Jaquias, Conan Hayes, and Shawn Sutton.

the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's second berth in next

** 'Bows Sign Hungarian Center **
Peter Kecskes, a 6-11, 210 pound pivotman from Hungary, yesterday
signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the University
of Hawaii. The seventeen-year-old is reportedly a good ball-
handler, rebounder, and outside shooter. He is currently a
senior at Veres Peter Gymnasium school in Budapest and plays for
a team that competes in Hungary's top club level. Kecskes said
he plans to put on weight and work hard to improve his game. "I
can improve," he said.

UH quarterback Tim Carey has been suspended for an indefinite
period as punishment for his involvement in a Chinatown dice game

** Action Against Carey Pending **
UH football coach Fred vonAppen said he met with quarterback Tim
Carey yesterday to discuss the gambling incident Carey was
arrested for this past weekend. The Stanford University transfer
was reportedly playing dice with ten other people at a Chinatown
location when police raided the game. VonAppen said he will wait
until he meets with athletic director Hugh Yoshida and police
investigators before determining sanctions against Carey, a
senior and current front-runner for the Rainbows' starting QB
job. The UH student-athlete conduct code makes no specific
reference to betting on dice games but does state that "gambling
interests, even in the most minor fashion, may jeopardize your
athletic career."
** Sumo Day 3 Report **
Grand champions Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) and Takanohana
are 2-1 after three days of the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo
Tournament. Both were victorious last night, Akebono defeating
Asanowaka (1-2) and Takanohana ousting Kotonishiki (1-2). Two of
the three other rikishi from Hawaii went down to defeat. Winning
and improving to 1-2 was Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima).
Meanwhile, dropping to 1-2 following losses were ozeki (champion)
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) and senior wrestler
Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe). Four wrestlers--
Asahiyutaka, Tochiazuma, Kaio, and Oginishiki--share the
tournament lead with 3-0 records.
** Girls High School Basketball **
Two-time defending champion McKinley will take on Waipahu and
Campbell will face Kalaheo in the Oahu Interscholastic
Association girls' basketball tournament semifinals on Thursday
night at Blaisdell Arena. All four teams have already qualified
for the May 21-24 state tournament in Hilo. In the
Interscholastic League of Honolulu, regular season champion
Punahou has clinched a state berth. Meanwhile the other ILH
teams are engaged in a single-elimination playoff tournament for
the league's second berth.

Former UH Wahine All-American Angelica Ljungquist said she will
play in the Bud Light 4-woman Volleyball League this summer. She
will graduate from the university with a political science degree

Bobby Curran will replace Bob Hogue as the play-by-play radio
announcer for UH football games for the upcoming season. Hogue

Daven Hermosura was named the Outstanding Pitcher and Most
Inspirational Player and Robert Medeiros was honored as the

** Thousands Complete H-3 Run **
About 15,000 runners gathered in Kaneohe yesterday morning for
the Great Trans Koolau Trek, a 10-mile footrace along the
controversial H-3 freeway through Haiku and Halawa valleys to
Aloha Stadium. Japan's Tatsuo Yuasa, with a time of 51 minutes,
24 seconds, won first-to-finish honors. Former McKinley High
runner Jonathan Lyau (54:56) was the first Hawaii resident to
cross the line. Japan's Azumi Miyazaki (57:50) was the first
female finisher while Ron Amundson (1 hour, 10 minutes) won the
wheelchair division. Urging participants not to run because the
construction of H-3 had destroyed ancient Hawaiian sites and
burial grounds, about 80 sign-holding protesters gathered near
Hawaiian Memorial Park on Kamehameha Highway where runners were
bussed to prior to the race. Despite the protests, race
organizer Jack Scaff described the event as "simply the play that
we had scripted."
** Season Pau for Baseball 'Bows **
The UH baseball team ended its strife-ridden 1997 baseball season
by defeating San Diego State in 10 innings, 4-3, yesterday at
Rainbow Stadium. The game was the final one for seniors Robert
Medeiros, Daren Masanda, Andrew McNally, Daven Hermosura, and
Robby Robinson. Medeiros went 3-for-3 in the game to end the
season with a .398 batting average. McNally pitched all ten
innings, striking out seven and allowing eight hits. Hawaii
ended up 22-34 overall and 14-16 in the Western Athletic
Conference. SDSU, which will host a WAC tournament game later
this week, is 38-20-1 and 17-13.
** Sea Warrior Women to Nationals **
The Hawaii Pacific University women's softball team won the NAIA
Far West Regional by defeating host Azusa Pacific, 3-1, on
Saturday. Susie Schoates spaced seven hits for the Sea Warriors
(46-6) while Star Perry sparked the offensive attack, going
3-for-3. Up next for HPU, the NAIA's top-ranked team, is the
NAIA National Tournament, which begins Wednesday at Decatur,
Alabama.
** ILH Track Titles to Buffanblu Boys, Girls **
Punahou flexed its track and field might once again, winning the
Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys and girls championships
on Saturday at the Buffanblu's Alexander Field. The Pun boys,
boosted by a victory in the meet's final race--the 4x400 relay--
edged Kamehameha by 4.5 points. Meanwhile, the Buffanblu girls
cruised to their team title, outpointing runner-up Kamehameha
139-61. Record-breaking performances were registered by
Punahou's Bennett Valencia, who eclipsed the 63-year-old 400-
meter run record with a time of 48.64, Kaione Crabb (59-7 1/2
shot put), and Victoria Chang (5:08:00, 1,600 run); and Iolani's
Erin Stovall (18-5 1/4 long jump). Also Hawaii Baptist Academy's
Matt Stevens won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200, and Kamehameha's Chad
Pa was victorious in the 100, 200 and long jump.
** Sumo Day 2 Report **
Sumo's top dogs--Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), Takanohana,
and Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani)--are all 1-1 after
two days of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament being held in Tokyo.
Akebono and Takanohana are grand champions while Musashimaru has
the rank of champion. Seven lower ranked rikishi are 2-0. Two
other wrestlers from Hawaii, Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa
Atisanoe) and Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima), are 1-1 and
0-2, respectively.

The UH Wahine softball team (37-25-1) failed to land a berth in
the 32-team NCAA Tournament field. Hawaii finished fourth in the
Western Athletic Conference. The top three teams--Colorado
State, Fresno State, and Utah--landed spots in the tourney.

Carlton Oswalt and Angelica Ljungquist were named the 1997
winners of the Jack Bonham Award, given to the top male and
female scholar-athletes at the University of Hawaii. Oswalt (3.3
GPA, sports medicine) was the starting kicker on the football
team and Ljungquist (3.34, political science) an All-American
middle-blocker on the Wahine volleyball team.

The HPU baseball team's bid for a spot in the NAIA National
Tournament ended on Saturday when the Sea Warriors lost to
Westmont, 5-4, in the finals of the Far West Regional Sectional
Tournament at Azusa, Calif. HPU ends the season with a 21-16
record.

UH football player Tim Carey was arrested with nine others by
police early Saturday morning in a Chinatown gambling raid.
Carey, a transfer from Stanford and considered the front-runner
for the starting quarterback job this fall, posted $200 bail and

** 'Bows Beat Aztecs **
Daven Hermosura pitched the distance and Robert Medeiros and Sean
Murphy sparked the offensive attack in Hawaii's 7-3 Western
Athletic Conference baseball victory over San Diego State last
night at Rainbow Stadium. Hermosura spaced out nine hits in nine
innings of work to improve his record to 6-4. "It was a
struggle," he admitted. Medeiros (3 for 4) and Murphy (2 for 5,
four RBIs) made the struggle a bit easier. Game two of the
season-ending three-game series is tonight. Hawaii is 21-33
overall and 13-15 in the WAC while the Aztecs are 37-19-1 and
16-12.
** Sea Warrior Teams Play for Titles **
Both the Hawaii Pacific softball and baseball teams advanced to
the finals of their respective Regional Tournaments by winning
twice yesterday at Azusa Pacific University in California. The
top-ranked softball team beat Southern California College, 12-1,
and host Azusa Pacific, 9-2, to advance to a title game battle
with Azusa Pacific today. The winner will earn an automatic bid
to the NAIA national tournament. Meanwhile, the Sea Warrior
baseball team also advanced to the Far West Regional title game
by defeating Azusa Pacific, 11-4, and Southern California
College, 15-7. HPU must defeat Westmont twice today to capture
the title.
** Wahine Split with Bulldogs **
The UH Wahine softball team split a doubleheader with fourth-
ranked Fresno State yesterday at the Wahine Softball Stadium. Na
Wahine won the opener, 4-2, and were shut out in the second game,
6-0. Hawaii (37-23-1) is hoping for an at-large berth in the
upcoming 32-team NCAA Tournament but may have to beat FSU (47-12)
in both ends of today's doubleheader to receive any kind of
consideration. Kelly Gentle pitched a seven-inning complete game
in Hawaii's victory yesterday. Joyce Antonio, Regina Kaaihili,
and Stephanie Weise paired hits for UH.
** OIA Track Titles to Castle, Moanalua **
The Castle boys and Moanalua girls captured Oahu Interscholastic
Association Track and Field championships last night at Kaiser
High. With just five members, the Knights won their first boys'
title since 1958, edging runner-up Moanalua, 52-46. Bryan Clay
was the big point scorer for Castle, notching victories in the
100, 200, and 110 high hurdles, and placing second in the long
and triple jumps. He also anchored the Knights' winning 4x400
relay team. In the girls' competition, Moanalua won just the
long jump (Nicole Pang) and triple jump (Annie Lindemann) but
scored points in eleven of sixteen events to outpoint Leilehua,
51-38. Kaiser's Endia Abrante was the top individual female
performer, winning the 100, 200, and 400.

** Hawaiian Open to be Axed? **
The Hawaiian Open golf tournament could be in danger of being
chopped by the scheduler's axe if a proposed change in the PGA
calendar is approved. PGA vice-president of communications John
Morris said that the Mercedes Championship tournament may be
moved from California to Hawaii in 1999, possibly to the week
traditionally designated for the Hawaiian Open, a 32-year
mainstay on the PGA schedule. Next year's tournament, set for
February 9-15, will go on as planned.
** Wahine versus Aztecs **
The UH Wahine (36-22-1) will play No. 4 Fresno State (45-10) in
doubleheaders today and tomorrow at the Wahine Softball Stadium.
The games will be the final ones of the regular season for both
teams. Unless Hawaii is invited to the NCAA tournament, four
seniors--Laynie Sueyasu, Chris Viernes, and twin sisters Joyce
and Rose Antonio-- will end their careers this weekend. Said UH
coach Bob Coolen: "When those four leave, we'll lose a lot of
hard work, fortitude and the a desire to be on the field and
among people they really enjoy."
** State Titles to Asao, Umemura, Buffanblu **
Norman Asao won the boys' title, Anna Umemura the girls', and
Punahou the team crown at the Hawaii High School Athletic
Association golf championship yesterday at Kauai's Wailua Golf
Course. Asao, a senior at Hawaii Baptist Academy, played
steadily, shooting a 36-hole total of 1-over 145 to notch a five-
stroke victory over Kauai High's Jaime Matsumura. Defending
champion Parker McLachlin of Punahou finished in a tie for third
with teammate Jim Seki at 151. Meanwhile, Umemura, a Punahou
senior, won her second girls' title, shooting a 9-over 153.
Teammate Kathy Cho and Hilo's Dawn Miyashiro were second at 166.
The team title went to Punahou, which edged runner-up Waiakea by
four strokes. Kauai High finished third.
** Sea Warrior Teams Face Elimination **
Two teams from Hawaii Pacific University are on the verge of
elimination from postseason tournaments after losing yesterday on
the mainland. The Sea Warriors' wahine softball team, top-ranked
in the NAIA, were upset, 1-0, by Southern California College at
the NAIA Far West Regional being played at Azusa, Calif. HPU
rebounded to rout Concordia College, 9-1, in a loser's bracket
game. Meanwhile, the HPU baseball team also lost to Southern
California College, dropping a 9-6 decision at the NAIA Far West
Baseball Sectionals also being played at Azusa, Calif. The Sea
Warrior men must win two games today to stay alive.

San Diego State beat UH-Hilo, 11-4, in a college baseball game
last night at the UHH Baseball Complex. The Aztecs (37-18-1)
scored in all but three innings in the nine-inning game. The
loss dropped the Vulcans to 17-30-1.

** Aloha to Five Baseball 'Bows **
Five players will end their UH baseball careers this weekend when
Hawaii takes on San Diego State in a three-game series at Rainbow
Stadium. The five are outfielder Robert Medeiros, second baseman
Daren Masanda, and pitchers Daven Hermosura, Robby Robinson, and
Andrew McNally. Each will take part in a traditional run around
the bases after Sunday's season finale. UH is 12-15 in the WAC
entering the series. The Aztecs, who lost to UH-Hilo, 8-7, last
night in Hilo, are 16-11.

Kauai. Defending champion Parker McLachlin of Punahou is in
second at 72, and Maui High's Jason Shimabukuro third at 73.
Punahou has a nine-stroke lead over Waiakea in the team
competition. The tourney concludes today.

Kalani's Kimo Hashiba and Shane Komine collaborated on three-
hitter to spark the Falcons to a 1-0 win over Aiea in an OIA

** Three Sign With 'Bows **
Two catchers and an infielder signed letters of intent to play
for the University of Hawaii baseball team next season. The trio
are St. Louis High's Kona Sampaio, Mililani's Kramer Aoki, and
David Ferres from the College of the Redwoods (Calif.). Sampaio
and Aoki, both catchers, are hitting .384 and .429 for their
respective teams this season. Ferres is batting .389 and has
earned all-league honors the past two seasons. Six other players
have already signed with the Rainbows, who conclude their 1997
season with a three-game series against San Diego State this
weekend at Rainbow Stadium.
** High School Track Championships on Tap **
Championship track meets for the Oahu Interscholastic Association
and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu will be held this
weekend. In the OIA, which will hold trials today and finals on
Friday at the Kaiser High track, Moanalua's Rickey Marshall-
Greene and Castle's Bryan Clay are the top individual performers.
Each is entered in the long and triple jumps, 200-meter dash, and
two relays. In the ILH, weightmen Kaione Crabb (Punahou), Mike
Souza (Punahou), and Ed Taamu (Iolani) take center stage along
with Hawaii Baptist Academy distance runner Matt Stevens, who
attempt to win the 3,200-meter race for the fourth consecutive
year. The ILH trials will be held tomorrow with the finals set
for Saturday at Punahou.
** College Baseball **
Hawaii Pacific will travel to Azusa, Calif. to take part in this
weekend's NAIA Far West Sectional Playoffs. The Sea Warriors are
anchored by strong-armed pitchers Gerrard Gier, Tommy Kim, Jesse
Brown, and Shawn Nakamura, who have notched 17 of the team's 19
wins this season. "I think we have the best starting pitching of
any team in the tournament," said HPU coach Allan Sato. Three
other teams are entered in the double-elimination tourney.

San Diego State defeated UH-Hilo, 2-0, last night at Wong Stadium
in Hilo. The Vulcans dropped to 16-29-1 with the loss while the
Aztecs improved to 36-17-1. The three-game series continues with
a single game tonight at the UHH baseball complex.

Hawaii Pacific (42-5) maintained its hold on the No. 1 spot in
the latest NAIA Top 25 Women's Softball Poll. The Sea Warriors
begin play in the NAIA Far West Regional tomorrow.

Kamehameha's Pono Kahale is one of 18 high school players named
to the USA Youth National Volleyball team. A first-team ILH
selection the past two seasons, Kahale will travel to Colorado
Springs this summer to vie for a spot on the USA traveling team.

** Skinner, Tafuna to Stick Around **
University of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen received some
good news yesterday when two of his players announced that they
would be in uniform for the Rainbows next season after making
plans to the contrary. One of the players, sophomore quarterback
Josh Skinner, had said last December he would transfer to
Northern Colorado in order to be closer to friends and family.
Skinner characterized the plan as "hasty" and asked vonAppen if
he could stay. The other non-departing player is offensive
lineman Sione Tafuna, who had indicated that he would be leaving
for a church mission this fall. He was the only center able to
practice in the recently completed spring football camp.

The OIA baseball playoffs kick off tomorrow with three games.
Nanakuli will take on Kalaheo at Kailua Rec Center, Kalani will
meet Aiea at Aiea Rec Center, and Moanalua will face Roosevelt at
Stevenson Intermediate field. Mililani (9-1), Pearl City (9-1),
Castle (8-1), and Kaiser (8-1) have drawn byes into Saturday's
quarterfinal round.

The OIA playoffs commence this week with first-round games on
Thursday and quarterfinal round play on Saturday. Games this week
will be played at school sites with next week's semifinals and
finals scheduled for Blaisdell Arena. Twelve teams are in the
hunt for the league title and state tournament berths, including
East champ McKinley and West co-titlists Campbell and Waipahu.
Kalaheo, Kaiser, Pearl City, Waianae, Kaimuki, Radford, Kahuku,
Castle, and Aiea are other hopefuls.

Punahou point guard Ki'i Spencer-Vasconcellos signed a letter of
intent to basketball for the UH Wahine next season. Initially,
Spencer-Vasconcellos had said she would walk-on at UH next season
but when coach Vince Goo found himself with an available
scholarship, he offered it to her. "She's just a great athlete,"
said Goo.

Kauai's Andy Irons, 18, captured the title of the Black Pearl
Horue Pro surfing event this past weekend in 4- to 5-foot waves
at Teahupoo, Tahiti. He pocketed $8,000 for the victory, his
first as a pro surfer. Oahu's Pancho Sullivan finished second,
earning $4,000.

Moanalua rolled to its fourth consecutive OIA Judo championship
by defeating Castle, 80-10 this past weekend. The title was also
Na Menehune's seventh overall.

The 32nd Hawaii High School Athletic Association golf tournament,
a 36-hole affair, begins tomorrow at the Wailua Golf Course on
Kauai. Punahou's Anna Umemura and Kamehameha's Elisha Au are

** 'Bows Season to End This Week **
BYU terminated Hawaii's already dim postseason hopes by defeating
the Rainbows, 8-7, on Saturday at the Cougars' field in Provo,
Utah. The 'Bows had been battling with San Diego State for the
sixth and final spot in the Western Athletic Conference
postseason baseball tournament. With three games remaining,
(Hawaii will host SDSU this week), UH is 12-15 in the conference
and San Diego State 16-10. BYU is 19-8 and has already clinched
a tournament berth. "Now we will be playing for pride,
especially the seniors," said embattled UH coach Les Murakami.
"I cannot be unhappy with the way they played. The played hard
and never gave up."
** Foti Brothers Claim Channel Title **
Yesterday, Lanikai Canoe Club paddlers John and Jim Foti
collaborated to win the Kaiwi Channel Relay, a 40-mile canoe solo
canoe race from Molokai's Kaluakoi Beach to Magic Island on Oahu.
The Fotis, taking advantage of a following current and 3- to 4-
foot swells, paddled to a race record time of 4 hours, 40
minutes, 46 seconds, knocking off more than four minutes from the
previous record set by Tom Conner and Kala Judd in 1991.
Outrigger Canoe Club's Walter Guild and Mark Rigg finished second
in 4:41:23. Mary Smolneski, Nicole Wilcox, and Lori Stewart
(5:43:31) cruised to a 6 minute-plus victory in the women's
division.
** Local Boys Boost Cardinal To Title **
Former local players Mike Lambert (Punahou) and Stewart Chong
(Kamehameha) helped lead Stanford to a 15-7, 15-10, 9-15, 6-15,
15-13, triumph over UCLA in the NCAA mens' volleyball national
championship match on Saturday at Columbus, Ohio. Lambert, who
was named to the all-tournament team, and Chong both are starters
for the Cardinal.
** Knight is Hawaii's Fastest **
Former Pearl City High runner Jason Knight edged two-time
defending champion Kelsey Nakanelua, a former Kamehameha athlete,
to claim the 1997 Hawaii's Fastest Human title on Saturday at the
Punahou High School track. Knight, 21, finished the 100-meter
event with a time of 10.7 seconds. Nakanelua, 30, was clocked at
10.9. Controversy marred the event, with Nakanelua claiming that
his start was affected because another runner (not Knight) had
false-started. However, track officials said no false start had
occurred and that Knight was indeed a legitimate winner. The
race was held in conjunction with the Punahou Relays where
records were set by Kaione Crabb (183-1 discus and 61-8 shot
put), Ricky Marshall-Green (23-2 long jump), and the Erin
Stovall-led Iolani girls in the 4x100 meter hurdle and 4x180
hurdle relays.

The UH Wahine split a WAC softball doubleheader with UNLV on
Saturday in Vegas. Na Wahine (36-22-1) won the opener, 2-1, and
dropped the second game, 4-3.

Iolani battered Kamehameha, 24-4, and Pearl City topped Nanakuli,
6-2, in the top local high school baseball games this weekend.
The Raiders, 14-1 in the ILH and ranked ninth in the U.S. in one
national poll, scored 17 runs in the first inning, sending 22
batters to the plate. In the Chargers' win, Sean Yamashita fired
a seven-inning no-hitter.

** UH Slams BYU **
Powered by five home runs and the hang-in-there pitching of Daven
Hermosura, Hawaii outslugged Brigham Young, 18-11, in a Western
Athletic Conference baseball game yesterday at Provo, Utah. The
Rainbows lashed out 23 hits against the Cougars. Leading the
Hawaii hit parade were Neal Honma and Robert Medeiros, who each
had four hits, and Sean Murphy, who slammed two homers. Every
Rainbow starter had at least one hit. Hermosura, despite giving
up 14 hits, five which were homers, went the distance on the
mound for Hawaii (12-13 WAC). Game two of the three-game series
is this morning at 10am HST.
** Funds Approved for SEA Upgrade **
Courtesy of state legislators, the UH athletic department will
receive $5.6 million in funds to upgrade the Special Events
Arena, thus opening the way for the university to serve as host
for next year's NCAA men's volleyball final four. Of immediate
concern is the construction of three more lockerrooms to be added
to the two in the current structure. The NCAA requires that any
host site have a minimum of four lockerrooms. Other planned
additions to the arena include rooms for medical training,
equipment, weight training, and classes, and a student academic
center. Construction is set to begin on July 1.
** Cardinal, Bruins in V-Ball Final **
With semifinal victories yesterday, Stanford and UCLA advanced to
the title game of the NCAA men's volleyball final four, insuring
that at least one player with Hawaii ties will be on a national
championship team this season. Stewart Chong (Kamehameha) and
Mike Lambert start at setter and outside hitter, respectively,
for Stanford, which swept Ball State last night. Meanwhile,
another former Kamehameha player, Fred Robins, is an outside
hitter and primary passer for UCLA, a five-game victor over Penn
State in the other semi,
** ILH Crown to Buffanblu **
Hilo High transfer Onaona Miller dropped in 17 points to spark
Punahou to a 48-41 Interscholastic League of Honolulu title-
clinching girls' basketball triumph over Kamehameha last night at
the Buffanblu's gym. With two games remaining in the regular
season, the Puns are 10-0 and have clinched one of the league's
two berths in the May 21-24 state tournament in Hilo. Kamehameha
and Iolani, both 7-3, will compete in a postseason tournament
with other ILH schools for the second berth.

** 'Bows, BYU this Weekend **
The UH baseball team needs no less than a three-game sweep of
Brigham Young this weekend to have any kind of chance for a berth
in the Western Athletic Conference postseason tournament. The
Rainbows (11-13 WAC) and Cougars (17-7) will butt heads in single
games today, tomorrow, and Saturday in Provo. Meanwhile, San
Diego State (14-10), the team UH is battling with for the sixth
and final playoff spot, is hosting New Mexico (7-16) this
weekend. Hawaii and SDSU will play a season-ending three-game
series next week at Rainbow Stadium. Before taking on the
Aztecs, the 'Bows must contend with heavy-hitting BYU, which has
the second highest team batting average (.363) in the NCAA this
season.
** Records Could Fall at Buffanblu Meet **
An unusually high number of talented athletes entered in this
weekend's 52nd annual Punahou Relays could result in several new
records. "We could see four or five records broken," said meet
director Doug Kilpatrick. Over 1,000 competitors will flock to
the Buffanblu's Alexander Field on Saturday for the meet,
including topflight athletes such as Castle's Bryan Clay
(sprints, jumps); Punahou's Bennett Valencia (middle-distance),
Mike Souza (weights), Kaione Crabb (weights), Eri Macdonald
(distance), and Victoria Chang (distance); Iolani's Ed Taaumu
(weights) and Erin Stovall (hurdles and jumps); and St. Anthony's
Robert McLean (pole vault).
** Sports Shorts **
The Maui County Council yesterday approved $1.2 million in funds
to upgrade War Memorial Stadium to meet the seating capacity
needs of the Hula Bowl all-star football game, which will now be
played on the Valley Isle after being held on Oahu since the
game's inception over 50 years ago. With the funds, locker room
and press box upgrades are expected, and over 10,000 seats will
be added.

The UH Wahine split a WAC softball doubleheader with New Mexico
yesterday at Albuquerque, N.M. Hawaii (33-22-1) won the opener,
12-4, then were pounded 14-0 in the second game. The Lobos,
cellar-dwellers in the conference, are 16-35. Na Wahine now
travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV tomorrow and Saturday.

** AA Honors for Ring, Lambert **
Yesterday, Jason Ring of the University of Hawaii and Mike
Lambert of Stanford were named to the AVCA All-America second
team. Both are seniors. Ring led the Rainbows in kills this
season, averaging 6.1 per game. Lambert, a graduate of Punahou
and a starter on the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, is the top gun for
the Cardinal, which advanced to the upcoming NCAA Final Four.
** Gambill Leads No. 1 Honokaa **
Averaging 20 points per game, Dayna "Sissy" Gambill is the main
reason undefeated Honokaa (18-0) is the top-rated girls high
school basketball team in the state this season. The Dragons
occupy the No. 1 position as a result of an attacking man-to-man
defense, overall team height, and the offensive firepower
provided by Gambill, a 5-foot-5 senior who "can take control of a
game," according to Honokaa coach Daphne Honma. "We don't let
(the ranking) get to our head," said the ehu-haired Gambill, who
set an unofficial world record in the deadlift (205 lbs.) as a
97-pound, 12-year-old.

** 'Bows Get Big Man **
A big man described as "very active," "a sleeper," and "a heck of
a player," yesterday made a verbal commitment to play basketball
for the University of Hawaii next season. Bryan Moeller, a 7-
foot, 240-pound center from Connors State (junior) College
(Okla.), said he will play hoops for the Rainbows next season.

who is expected to fill the void left by Seth Sundberg, was
hampered by injury problems this past season but still averaged
double figures in points and rebounds. "Hawaii feels right,"
said the new recruit. "It's an awesome team. I think I fit in
really well with the players."
** Three Inducted into Golf Hall **
Art Fujita, Paul Spengler, and the late Sam Kaaua were inducted
into the Aloha Section PGA Hall of Fame at ceremonies in their
honor yesterday. Fujita, 63, a veteran of nearly a dozen
national Public Links tournaments, was instrumental in landing
host spots for the tourney on Kauai three times. Spengler, 57,
now an executive for a company that manages several big-name golf
courses, including Pebble Beach, was a dominant player on the
local scene in the 60s. Kaaua, who passed away in January at age
83, was a seven-time club champion at Waialae, among other
accomplishments. The trio join 37 other local golfing greats in
the Hall.

** 'Bows Hopeful for Playoff Berth **
Hanging on to a longshot hope for a spot in the postseason, the
UH baseball team embarks on a seven-game road swing that starts
tonight with a single game against Fresno State at Beiden Field.
The Rainbows will play three more games against the Bulldogs then
jet to Provo, Utah for a three-game set against Brigham Young.
UH has a 9-11 WAC record and is battling San Diego State (12-9)
and Texas Christian (11-13) for a wildcat playoff bid. "We gotta
win as many of those games as possible," said UH coach Les
Murakami. "It could be decided in our final series of the season
against San Diego State." Murakami praised the play of senior
Robert Medeiros, who has hit safely in 17 of the last 19 games,
boosting his UH career average to .323.
** Na Wahine also Road-Bound **
In a situation similar to the baseball team, the UH Wahine
Softball team also is mainland-bound for an extended road trip.
Coach Bob Coolen said his team needs to win seven of ten games on
the trip to land a playoff berth. Currently Na Wahine are 9-9 in
the WAC and 28-20-1 overall. UH will play doubleheaders against
Tulsa on Sunday and Monday, another twinbill against New Mexico
on Wednesday, and two more doubleheaders against UNLV next
weekend. "We're going in gung ho," said UH assistant Dee
Wisneski.
** Koolau Hopes to Enhance Links Appeal **
Thanks to the efforts of a new marketing director, Koolau Golf
Course, located at the base of the Koolaus in Kaneohe, is trying
to make itself more inviting to locals and visitors who are leery
of the course's reputation for difficulty and expense. Ed
Kageyama, the new director, has instituted a $45 per round rate
for local residents (non-residents pay $85). What's more, to
enhance the playability of the course, billed as "the toughest in
the nation" because of narrow, hilly fairways, four-foot fairway
stakes have been installed to give golfers a target to aim for to
set up approach shots.
** Sports Shorts **
Felisa Pascua and Steve Richey were named the top scholar
athletes for 1996-97 at Hawaii Pacific University at an awards
banquet last night at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel. Pascua earned
NAIA All America first-team softball honors while maintaining a
3.32 (of 4.0) GPA as a business administration major. Richey, a
standout guard for the Sea Warrior basketball team and also a bus
ad major, has a cumulative 3.23 GPA.

Local boy Erwin Villaver was a fifth round TKO victim of Mexico's
Rosenberg Rosas in the main event of a professional boxing card
last night at the Dole Cannery Ballrooms. A crowd of about 800
watched Rosas pummel Villaver before referee Abe Pacheco stopped
the fight seconds before the end of the round. Local fighters
won four of the five other bouts on the card.

** Streamlined ASG Coming Up **
Aloha State Games officials yesterday announced that a pared down
version of the Islands' version of the Olympics will take place
in June. To help alleviate the stress on Games volunteers, most
of the 55 sporting events will be held between June 11-15. In
past years, events have been spread out for up to two weeks.
"The two weekend stretch was wearing out our volunteers," said
Games honcho Lenny Klompus, "so we are compacting them mainly to
one weekend." More than 7,000 local athletes are expected to
compete.
** Grazing in the Grass at Aloha? **
Prodded by officials from the National Football League, Aloha
Stadium representatives are considering replacing the artificial
turf at the Halawa site with natural grass or SportGrass, a
combination of natural and synthetic blades. The latter is the
surface of choice, according to a poll of NFL players. "It is
awesome stuff," said Utah coach Ron McBride of SportGrass, which
was installed at the Utes' stadium two seasons ago. "It has
really cut down on our injuries." NFL official Joe Ellis said
installing some kind of natural surface at Aloha Stadium
"certainly wouldn't hurt" Hawaii's chances of continuing to host
the Pro Bowl, the league's postseason all-star game.
** UH Volleyball News **
University of Hawaii volleyball players Aaron Wilton, Angelica
Ljungquist, Chastity Nobriga, Joselyn Robins, Nalani Yamashita,
and Wendi Park will graduate next month. Also receiving degrees
will be 1996 Rainbow men players Erik Pichel and Troy Hotz. Rick
Tune, who will forgo his final year of eligibility, is scheduled
to graduate next December.

In this week's NCAA statistics, Curt Vaughan is ranked second in
assists per game (18.31). He trails Stanford's Stewart Chong
(18.73), a former Kamehameha player. Also in the top 10
statistically are Jason Ring (9th in kills), Sivan Leoni (10th in

Keith Taira fired a three-hitter in Castle's 1-0 OIA baseball
victory over Kaiser yesterday at the Knight's field in Kaneohe.
Losing pitcher Grant Sato also pitched effectively, limiting
Castle to just four hits. "We were fortunate," said Knights'
coach Joe Tom Jr. The victory propelled Castle into a three-way
tie in the OIA East with the Cougars and Roosevelt. All are 5-1.
In the Western Division, a three-way deadlock also exists. Pearl
City, Mililani, and Nanakuli are all 6-1.

** HPU Wahine Ranked First **
For the first time ever, a team from Hawaii is ranked first in
the NAIA Women's Softball Poll. That team is Hawaii Pacific, the
owners of a 42-5 record and a spot in the upcoming Far West
Regional. "We're not taking anything for granted," said HPU
coach Howard Okita. "We have to go out there thinking that we
have to win every game." The Sea Warriors have an aggregate
batting average of .335 and an earned run average of 0.76.
Michele Ringor leads the team with a .391 average. "Records,
rankings, and all that stuff is nice to look at," added Okita,
"but it's where you end up that counts."
** UH Golf **
The UH Wahine are eighth and the men 12th after two rounds of
play at the Western Athletic Golf Championships being played at
Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas, Texas. Linda Appelblad, at 12-
over 156, good for 18th place in the individual competition, is
Na Wahine's low scorer. For the men, Jarrod Mizusawa is tied for
22nd with a 36-hole total of 4-over 148. The tournament
concludes today.

UH volleyball players Joselyn Robins and Aaron Wilton were named
to the National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America
team for excellence in strength training, conditioning,

** 'Bows End Spring at Beach **
With the intended work of the last month done, UH football coach
Fred vonAppen canceled the final scheduled workout for his team
yesterday. Instead, vonAppen, his coaches, some family members,
and the players spent the afternoon playing volleyball, relaxing,
and eating pizzas at the Shriner's Beach Club in Waimanalo, the
same venue once used for the "Magnum P.I." television series.
"They deserved a little R&R," said vonAppen. Assistant coach
Doug Semones added: "We accomplished what we needed to accomplish
this spring. Another day of bashing each other wouldn't have
helped us."
** More Big League Action at Aloha? **
The success of the weekend series between the San Diego Padres
and the St. Louis Cardinals at Aloha Stadium has sparked the
interest of other Major League clubs, who have expressed a desire
to perhaps play in Hawaii in future seasons. Said Chicago White
Sox general manager Ron Schueler, who watched the game live on
ESPN: "From what I saw, it looked like a good, enthusiastic
crowd, and a nice ballpark. The fans really got into it."
National League president Leonard Coleman said, "You can never
tell where something like this will lead."

Nationally-ranked Iolani will take on Punahou and Kamehameha in
local high school baseball games of note this week. The Raiders
(11-0 ILH), ranked ninth in the latest Baseball America High
School Top 25 Poll, will take on the Buffanblu (6-4) today and

** Cards Take Two of Three from Padres **
With large crowds in attendance, the St. Louis Cardinals took two
of three games from the San Diego Padres this weekend at Aloha
Stadium. Just over 37,000 fans watched the Cards sweep a
doubleheader, 1-0 and 2-1, on Saturday. Yesterday, the largest
crowd ever to watch a baseball game in Hawaii, 40,050, saw the
Padres pound out an 8-2 victory. The three games were the first-
ever Major League regular season contests ever played in Hawaii.
Padres' general manager Kevin Tower said he is open to returning
to the Islands for future games. "Honolulu certainly took us in
with open arms and made us feel at home here," he said.
** BYU Rallies to Oust 'Bows **
Brigham Young, down two games to nil, rebounded to eliminate
Hawaii from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's
volleyball playoffs on Saturday at Smith Fieldhouse on the BYU
campus. The Cougars, playing most of the final two games without
their top player, Ryan Millar, who was injured, won the 3 hour,
14 minute marathon, 13-15, 6-15, 15-11, 15-12, 15-13. "I
honestly felt we should have won," said UH coach Mike Wilton.
"But we have to give credit to BYU." The loss ended the season
for the Rainbows, who bid aloha to five players: Gavin Cook, Kai
Kahele, Jason Ring, Rick Tune, Curt Vaughan, and Aaron Wilton.
** Former Raiders Drafter **
Former Kahuku player Chris Naeole was the 10th player chosen in
the National Football League draft on Saturday. Naeole, who went
on to play for Colorado, earning consensus All-America honors for
the Buff's this season, was selected by the New Orleans Saints.
Naeole's agent, David Morway, said he expects his client to
receive a deal comparable to the $7.5 million, 5-year pact of
last season's No. 10 pick. Also selected in the draft was
Naeole's Kahuku teammate, Itula Mili, a tight end for Brigham
Young. He was selected in the sixth round by the Seattle
Seahawks. UH tight end Ryan Green signed a free agent deal with
the San Diego Chargers.
** Sport Shorts **
Waiakea High football coach Tim Lino announced last Friday that
he is resigning so that he can begin a program for an
administrative position in the Hawaii Department of Education.
Lino, a '77 graduate of Kamehameha and now the acting vice-
principal at Waiakea, has led the Warriors to Big Island
Interscholastic Federation championships the last several
seasons. His successor has yet to be named.

Paul Butterfield and Sylvia Fisher were the respective men's and
women's winners at the 6.75-mile Wahiawa Pineapple Run on
Saturday morning in Wahiawa. Butterfield, a former University of
Tennessee runner, finished in 36 minutes, six seconds. Fisher
(41:27), a Hawaii Pacific University student, was 10th overall
and the first woman across the line.

The UH football team will conclude spring practice with a light
workout today. Head coach Fred vonAppen said only returning All-
WAC defensive back Eddie Klaneski is guaranteed a starting job
next fall. "We have a lot of work to do," he confessed. The
Rainbows open their 1997 season against Minnesota on Aug. 30 at
Aloha Stadium.

The UH Wahine softball team lost three of four games to 16th
ranked Colorado State this weekend at the Wahine Softball
Stadium. Hawaii is now 9-9 in the WAC and 28-20-1 overall. CSU

** National Honor for Angelica **
Last week, UH Wahine All-American Angelica Ljungquist was named
this year's winner of the Honda Award for women's college
volleyball. As such, she is now in a pool with ten athletes from
other sports for the Broderick Cup, awarded to the top amateur
women's competitor in the United States. If Ljungquist wins, she
will become the second UH Wahine to garner the award. Former UH
player Deitre Collins won the Broderick Cup in 1983.
** Former Islander Looks Back **
Recalling a time when he earned about a $1,000 a month as a
member of the Hawaii Islanders, seven-time National League
batting champion Tony Gwynn says his time in the Islands in the
early 80s were important to his career. "I learned the
importance of work ethic in Hawaii," said Gwynn. As a 21-year-
old phenom in 1983, Gwynn said he labored hard and often to hone
his hitting and fielding skills while playing for the Islanders.
"I remember working out early in the day because it would rain
later," he recalled. Gwynn, now a member of the San Diego
Padres, is here with his team to take on the St. Louis Cardinals
for a three-game series this weekend at Aloha Stadium. "People
will get their money's worth," said Gwynn of the match-up.
** Former Isle Players Hopeful about NFL Draft **
Former Kahuku High player Chris Naeole is expected to be selected
in the first or second round of the National Football League
draft, set for Saturday in New York. Naeole played his college
ball at the University of Colorado, where he earned consensus
All-America honors as an offensive lineman. Other players with
island ties that may be grabbed by NFL clubs are BYU tight end
Itula Mili (Kahuku High) and University of Washington linebacker
Ink Aleaga (Maryknoll/Pac-Five).
** Sports Shorts **
The UH Wahine softball team (27-17-1) will play doubleheaders
against 16th-ranked Colorado State (36-9) tomorrow and Saturday
at the Wahine Softball Stadium. Na Wahine can enhance their shot
at postseason play by sweeping both twinbills. UH is currently
in fifth place in the Western Athletic Conference. CSU is tied
with Fresno State for first.

With 4.5 speed in the 40, outside linebacker Rinda Brooks is
expected to bolster the pass rush for the UH football 'Bows. A
transfer from New Mexico Military Academy, Brooks is "a step
quicker than anyone else" to the quarterback, said UH defensive
coordinator Don Lindsey. "He can make a difference."

UH basketball coach Riley Wallace signed two players for his team
next season. The duo are Chad Hook, a 6-2 guard from
Marshalltown Community College (Iowa), and Casey Cartwright, a 6-
5 guard/small forward from Seminole State (junior) College
(Okla.). Wallace has three more scholarships to offer. One will
go to a high school point guard and the others to big-bodied
centers.

Charles "Chic" Hess is the new basketball coach at Kahuku High
School, replacing Mark Carpenter, who resigned to tend to job
commitments on the mainland. Hess, the father of Kalaheo High
all-state player Steve Hess, was the head coach at BYU-Hawaii for
three seasons in the late 80s.

** Higher UH Ducat Prices Requested **
UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida is pushing for approval to
increase ticket prices for one football game and all regular
season men's basketball games next season. Citing the need "to
pay our bills," Yoshida said he has asked the UH board of
regents for permission to increase the price of tickets for the
Nov. 29 UH-Notre Dame football game by $5 and UH men's basketball
games by $1 to $2. His announcement comes a day after UH secured
a lucrative $1.2 million per year television deal from KHNL/KFVE.
"The increases will hopefully help us meet some of our needs,"
said Yoshida.
** Rare Twinbill Set for Saturday **
The St. Louis Cardinals (4-8) and the San Diego Padres (7-5) will
play a doubleheader at Aloha Stadium this Saturday, one of only
three twinbills scheduled between major league teams this season.
The teams will also play a single game on Sunday. Aloha Stadium
official Les Keiter said that over 30,000 tickets have been sold
so far for both Saturday and Sunday. The games will be radio
broadcast live on KGU (760 AM). The Sunday game (2:05 pm HST)
will be telecast on ESPN.
** Lakers to Forgo Isle Trip Next Fall **
After conducting preseason training camp in Hawaii in nine of the
ten past years, the Los Angeles Lakers will take their show to
Europe next October instead of holding workouts on the UH campus.
Last season, the Lakers, with new addition Shaquille O'Neal,
practiced at the Special Events Arena and then played two
preseason games before sellout crowds of over 10,000. Next fall,
the team will be playing a series of exhibition games in Europe,
forgoing their annual trip to the Islands. UH AD Hugh Yoshida
said that the Lakers did say they'd like to return to Hawaii in
1998.
** Na Wahine Land Postwoman **
Sarah Peterson, a 6-2 center from Ashland High (Ore.), yesterday
signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the UH Wahine
next season. The daughter of a PE teacher/coach, Peterson was
her league's player of the year and a third-team all-state pick,
after averaging 19 points and 9 rebound per contest. Last fall,
UH also signed two players from Washington state: 5-11 forward
Crystal Lee from Central Valley and 5-10 guard/forward Karena
Greeny from Port Angeles High.
** National POW Honors for Milo **
UH outside hitter and Rainbow co-captain Naveh Milo was picked as
the AVCA National Player of the Week after hitting .467 with 47
kills in two matches against USC this past weekend. The 6-2
junior from Israel also contributed 18 digs and 7 blocks for the
ninth-ranked Rainbows (18-10), who will take on No. 4 BYU (19-5)
in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first-round playoff match
this Saturday at Provo, Utah.

UH-Hilo terminated a 12-game losing streak by defeating Gonzaga,
10-7, in college baseball game yesterday at Spokane, Wash.
Felipe Caoili hit two doubles and scored three runs to spark the
Vulcans, who return to the Big Island to end their season with a

Top 10 Soccer Poll, which is determined by a vote of members of

Iolani's Erin Stovall was named to the USA Today girls basketball
All-America third team. Last week, the 5-7 senior guard earned a

Raymond Melim ('28), and Allen Richardson ('65) were recently

** KHNL Lands UH TV Rights **
To the tune of $6.2 million paid out over the next five years,
KHNL and its subsidiary station KFVE won the right to broadcast
University of Hawaii sports events. The $1.25 million average
payout per year is almost three times the amount KHNL is paying
the university under the current contract. UH athletic director
Hugh Yoshida said he was "very pleased" with the outcome since
the money from the pact will play a major part in the athletic
department's move toward financial self-sufficiency. KGMB was
the only other party seeking UH television rights but station
manager Dick Grimm submitted a no-bid letter because KGMB was
having difficulties meeting specific requirements stipulated by
UH.
** Sea Warriors Playoff Bound **
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team received some good news
yesterday when the NAIA tendered an invitation to the Sea
Warriors to play in the four-team, double-elimination Far West
Sectional playoffs set to run from May 7-10 at a yet to be
determined site. HPU completed regular season play a week and
half ago, posting a 19-14 win-loss record for 1997. Sea Warrior
coach Allan Sato said he was "kind of surprised" about receiving
a bid. "I had my doubts about who (the selection committee)
would pick," he said.

** 'Bows to Face Cougars **
Hawaii will take on Brigham Young in a first round game of the
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation postseason tournament on
Saturday at Provo, Utah. The Rainbows (18-10) finished third in
the Pacific Division and the Cougars (19-5) second in the
Mountain Division. Hawaii gained the playoff spot by defeating
USC, 15-12, 13-15, 15-11, 15-7, on Saturday night at a soldout
Special Events Arena.
** Rainbows Butt Heads **
UH football coach Fred vonAppen called the outcome of his team's
first controlled scrimmage of spring practice "about what was
expected." After watching the 50-play practice game, the Hawaii
gridiron boss said, "Obviously, we're not in game shape yet. Even
though we're not in bad shape cardiovascular-wise, playing shape
is different than conditioning shape." Redshirt running back
Quincy Jacobs, a Stanford transfer, ran well.

Swing forward Casey Cartwright, a 6-foot-5 junior-to-be, signed a
letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Hawaii
next season. He played for Seminole State (junior) College this
past season, averaging 19.5 points and six rebounds per contest.
"I like to shoot the trey, and I like to go inside," he said.

Newly crowned Masters champion Tiger Woods will receive an
invitation to play in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf set for November
19 and 19 at Poipu on Kauai. Whether the 21-year-old phenom will
accept the invitation has yet to be determined.

Chad Wanders helped San Diego State avert being swept by Hawaii,
a team he once was a member of. Wanders, who was on the UH
roster in 1995 but transferred to Saddleback Junior College and
then to SDSU, pitched eight strong innings in leading SDSU past
UH, 9-4, yesterday at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego. The
triumph by the Aztecs (10-8 WAC) kept them from being swept by
the Rainbows (7-10 WAC) in the three-game series. Hawaii had won
games one and two on Friday and Saturday.

Nalu Kukea won the kayak division and Mark Rigg the one-man canoe
at the Kanaka Ikaika Poai Puni Series Oahu Championships in
waters off of Oahu's south shore. Kukea paddled the 18-mile
course from Makai Pier near Makapuu to the Waikiki Yacht Club in
2 hours, 10 minutes, 59 seconds. "It was brutal, real brutal,"
said Kukea of the nearly windless, hot conditions. Rigg won the
one-man canoe division with a time of 2:26:23. Kelly Fey
(2:34:25) and Margie Kawaiaea (3:16:38) were the women's kayak
and canoe winners, respectively.

The losing streak for the UH-Hilo baseball team was extend to 11
after the Vulcans lost to Lewis-Clark State, 9-8, yesterday at
Lewiston, Idaho. The Vulcans dropped to 15-27- while LCS
improved to 30-5-1.

Hawaii Pacific swept a women's college softball doubleheader from
Chaminade yesterday at the Sea Warriors' windward field. HPU
(40-5) won the first game, 7-0, and the second, 5-1. The
Silverswords fell to 22-25.

** 'Bows Tame Trojans **
Jason Ring knocked down 23 kills and Naveh Milo chipped in 19
more to spark Hawaii past USC, 12, 5, and 11, in a Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match in front of
7,267 fans at the Special Events Arena last night. The victory
moved the Rainbows (9-9 MPSF) to within a game of clinching a
postseason playoff berth. A loss to the Trojans (9-8) in
tonight's regular season finale would mean a plethora of tie-
breaker scenarios would come into play. "Tonight is the main
match," said Milo. "We need to work harder." All American
outside hitter Aaron Wilton sat out the match due to illness.
** Baseball 'Bows Win **
Daven Hermosura pitched a complete-game eight-hitter and Robert
Medeiros rapped out three hits to lead the UH baseball team past
San Diego State, 8-2, yesterday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium
in San Diego. The Rainbows are now 14-27 overall and 6-9 in the
Western Athletic Conference. SDSU dropped to 9-7 and 26-12-1.
Game two of the three-game series will be played today at
5pm HST.

Former UH coach Bob Wagner withdrew his name from the pool of
candidates for the head football job at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.
Canned by UH at the end of the 1995 season, Wagner had
interviewed for the CPSLO job earlier this week. He did not say
why he no longer wanted to be considered.

Castle High ('89) grad Dean Wilson is competing on the Asian Golf
tour where he occupies the 12th spot on the money-earned list
with $37,500. A graduate of BYU in 1991, Wilson said, "The PGA
Tour is where I want to play. I don't want to play anywhere
else."

Cordell Ray, a 6-10, 190-pound forward from Eastfield College, an
NCAA Division III school, signed a letter of intent to play
basketball for Hawaii Pacific next season. "He'll make an impact
with us right away," said HPU coach Tony Sellitto. "He's a
(NCAA) Division I player, not doubt about it."

opener yesterday, defeating the Golden Valley Eagles, 2-1, at

** 'Bows, Trojans Tangle Tonight **
A Special Events Arena crowd of about 9,000 is expected tonight
to see the UH men take on Southern Cal in a Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation volleyball match. The two teams are battling
for postseason playoff spots. The 'Bows (16-10 overall, 8-9
conference) can clinch a spot in the MPSF playoffs by beating the
Trojans (12-9, 9-7) tonight and tomorrow. A split will mean tie-
breakers will come into play. Lose two and the 'Bows will play
no more this season. And Hawaii may have to beat USC without
outside hitter Aaron Wilton, who is suffering from bronchitis.
** Tiny Postseason Hopes Remain for Baseball 'Bows **
Playoffs? UH baseball team? Unheard of this season? Not so,
says never-say-die UH coach Les Murakami, whose 13-27 Rainbows
take on San Diego State today (4pm HST) at Tony Gwynn Stadium in
the opener of a three-game weekend series. Sweep the Aztecs (9-6
WAC) and the Rainbows (5-9 WAC) would be just a half-game behind
in the chase for a conference playoff berth. "I know it's a long
shot," admitted Murakami, "but we can't give up. We have to go
out and win one game at a time."
** Sports Shorts **
The Oahu Interscholastic Association Relay Championships are
scheduled for tonight at Radford High School. The host Rams,
paced by sprinter/middle-distance runner Mondelle Warren, will be
contenders in several events.

Lewis-Clark State exploded for ten runs in the seventh inning in
an 18-6 small college baseball triumph over UH-Hilo yesterday at
Lewiston, Idaho. The loss dropped the Vulcans to 15-24-1 while
LCS improved to 27-5-1.

Burgess (8:26:44) were the respective men's and women's winners
of the 50-mile run at the RRCA State Championships on Sunday at

** Ohana, Friends, 'Bows Bid Farewell to Smith **
A tearful throng of family members, friends, and teammates
gathered at St. Catherine's Church in Kapaa, Kauai yesterday for
memorial services for Shannon Smith, the UH football player who
lost his life on March 29 at the Garden Island's Waipahee
Slippery Slide after saving the six-year-old son of UH coach Fred
vonAppen. Addressing the gathering of over 600, the Reverend
Bruce Lery said, "Death is always difficult for those who mourn.
It's up to you to keep Shannon alive in this world."
** Home Finale for 'Bows **
Hawaii (16-10) will take on Southern Cal (12-9) this weekend at
the Special Events Arena in the final two Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation volleyball regular season matches of the season for
both teams. If UH does not advance to postseason play, six
Rainbow players could end their careers on Saturday. The six
include seniors Jason Ring, Curt Vaughan, Aaron Wilton, Gavin
Cook, and Kai Kahele, and junior Rick Tune, who will graduate
next semester and will forgo his final year of eligibility. To
fill the holes in his roster, UH coach Mike Wilton has
concentrated recruiting efforts on foreign soil, with prospects
from Yugoslavia, Germany, Brazil, Sweden, and Israel expressing
interest playing for the Rainbows.
** Seasiders Go For Gold **
The BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team is a strong favorite to
capture the NAIA national title this season. The top-ranked
Seasiders are 27-0 this season and have won 39 straight matches
dating back to last season. "We're solid all the way down," said
BYUH coach Dave Porter. So good are the Seasiders that former
NAIA singles champion Anneli Ornstedt is competing as the team's
No. 4 player. BYUH shut out No. 11 Hawaii Pacific, 9-0,
yesterday.

Aiea (4-0) erupted for 10 runs in the fifth inning to notch a 13-
4 win over previously unbeaten Nanakuli (3-1) yesterday at Aiea
Recreation Center Field. David Yoshida, Chris Sergent, Mark
Okano, and Jason Sumida paired hits for Na Alii.

yesterday at BYUH field in Laie. The Seasiders (36-5), ranked
second in the NAIA, won the first game, 8-0, and the second, 6-1.

week's USA Today Top 25 Poll. Western Athletic Conference rival

** Hogue History as UH Radio Voice? **
KHON sportscaster Bob Hogue could see his duties as the play-by-
play man for UH football radio broadcasts curtailed because of a
report he ran regarding three suspended Rainbow basketball
players. Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida said that Hogue
undermined his "sense of responsibility to (the university)" by
pointing out specific details in that case. This week, Yoshida
will meet with Dave Iverson, the honcho of company that
broadcasts UH games on the radio, to discuss Hogue's fate.
** UH Basketball Report **
Hawaii will take on Brigham Young in the first round of next
season's Rainbow Classic basketball tournament. The Cougars were
recently secured as a replacement for Florida, which withdrew
from the tourney for an undisclosed reason. Longtime rivals in
the Western Athletic Conference, the Rainbows and Cougars did not
face each other this season because of expansion and realignment.

Senior-to-be Anthony Carter has received an invitation to try out
for the U.S. National Team that will compete at the World
University Games or World Games this summer. Tryouts will be
held next month at Colorado Springs.

Carter was named the Rainbows' Most Valuable Player at a team
awards banquet last night at the Hale Koa Hotel. Danny Furlong
was named most inspirational and Seth Sundberg received the
captain's award. Others receiving awards were Michael Robinson
(community service), Eric Ambrozich (top rebounder), Micah
Kroeger (top defender), and Alika Smith (best freethrow shooter).
** UH Volleyball News **
The UH men's volleyball team (16-10), ranked No. 9 in the latest
USA Today Top 15 Poll, needs to sweep its two game series against
No. 13 USC (12-9) this week to give itself a decent chance at a
postseason playoff spot. Anything less and the Rainbows must
rely on luck and complex array of tiebreakers to advance. The
'Bows and Trojans will square off on Friday and Saturday nights
at the Special Events Arena.

Roosevelt High's Andrea Nishioka has signed a letter of intent to
play for the University of Hawaii women's water polo team next
year. Since Roosevelt has no water polo team, Nishioka competes
on a team composed of players from several OIA schools. That
team plays exhibition matches against ILH schools.

Radford High teacher Leilani Okuda could someday be Olympic-bound
after receiving certification from the International Softball
Federation to umpire international games. A 1983 McKinley High
grad, Okuda is the first from Hawaii to receive fast-pitch
certification.

Mario Claytor has signed a letter of intent to play basketball
for UH-Hilo next season. A 6-5, 215-pounder, Claytor, 27, played
for Western Carolina, an NCAA Division 1 school, this past
season.

Softball Poll released yesterday. The Sea Warriors travel to
Laie to play BYU-Hawaii (3-22) today.

The losing streak for the UH-Hilo baseball team was extended to
seven after the Vulcans fell to Washington State, 6-3, yesterday
at Pullman, Wash. Keiki Mattson had two hits, including a homer,
for UHH (15-23-1).

The UH Wahine golf team finished 10th in the 18-team Utah-Dixie
Classic that concluded yesterday at Sunbrook Golf Club at St.
George, Utah. Dawn Kaneshiro (18 over-234) was the low scorer

** UH Football News **
The UH football team has only two kickers participating in spring
practice and head coach Fred vonAppen has ordered both to take
part in drills with position players instead of working
exclusively on kicking techniques. Last season, the kickers
worked separately from the team and "became aliens," according to
vonAppen. Now, kicker/punters Chad Shrout and Eric Hannum spend
a minimum of five periods in a practice session working out with
other position players. Shrout works out with the defensive line
and Hannum the receivers.
** Girls' High School Basketball **
Despite not playing in any of her team's four regular season
games, Iolani's 5-8 senior guard Erin Stovall has been named to
the second team of the Parade All-American High School Girls
Basketball Team. A transfer from a school in California, Stovall
has missed Raider games because in recent weeks she has been
participating in track and in an All-America game on the
mainland. Iolani coach Bernie Ching said he expects Stovall to
make her regular season debut this Friday against Sacred Hearts.
