| Saturday 8/25/01 at the Frank B. Shaner Falsetto Contest, held at Hawai'i Theatre: First Place went to James Michael Kealaolaule'a Broclic Kukona-Pacheco, who sang "Hula O Makee" and accompanied himself on 'ukulele, putting it down to dance the haina verse as he sang. Second Place went to Bill Lyman, a student of opera , for his rendition of "E Mama E." Third Place went to Billy Kekona of Wai'anae, for his delivery of an original Hawaiian language song "Eclipse." (Eclipse is the only English word in the song, so I refrain from calling it a hapa-haole tune, which it technically is, perhaps.) The Clyde 'Kindy" Sproat Falsetto & Storytelling Contest was held on Sunday at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Grand Prize winner was Lopaka Santiago. (I don't know the relationship, but he is a Kanaka'ole.) First Runner Up was James Kukona-Pacheco, who also won the Storytelling Award. Second Runner Up was O'ahu's Billy Lyman. Mahalo to the folks at Hula Records for the info. |
