Chuck and Mary Smith caught Led & Cyril Aug 22 in Nashville, TN at the Radio Café
Hey Rabbett,
On the evening of August 22, my husband and I were fortunate enough to catch
Led and Cyril at the historic Radio Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee. And what
a treat it was!
We arrived 1/2 hour before the show, and it was already standing room only.
The Radio Cafe had created a special Hawaiian menu for the occasion, and
distributed shell leis and chocolate covered macadamia nuts as customers
entered. We had a quick dinner on the patio while waiting for the show to
begin. Who should show up at the table next to us but Led and Cyril! They
also were having a quick dinner before the show. They both walked around to
all the other tables, meeting the audience. I could not resist telling
them that I learned of their tour through irh.com. They said to be sure and
tell Rabbett hello, so...Hello, Rabbett, from Led and Cyril!
Cyril started the show. He gave a short tutorial on "slack key guitar", and
told us he would be playing in open C. He talked about the time he met the
legendary Chet Atkins at the Sheraton Music City in Nashville. He was
thrilled to meet this famous guitar picker, for whom he had so much respect.
Cyril played a tribute to Chet, as well as tributes to his father Gabby,
Barney
Isaacs, and Sonny Chillingworth. As he sang the beautiful Hawaiian
classics, I gazed out the window, and could almost see a beautiful full moon
glistening on the calm ocean, and hear the rustle of wind in the palm trees.
I could feel the stress of the day disappearing, and from the looks on the
faces of others in the audience, so could they.
After a short break, Led came out. He performed some beautiful songs in
that falsetto he does so well. Once again, I was transformed back to the
islands. He played several guitar solos, amazing the guitar players in the
audience with his limber fingers. Then, he brought out the ukulele, and
made it do things I've never heard a ukulele do. He played "Killing Me
Softly" and "Blue Spanish Eyes" on the ukelele, and made them sound as
beautiful as I've ever heard them. What talent! He ended with a good old
southern classic, "Turkey in the Straw"--his tribute to the south, I'm
guessing.
Next, Cyril joined Led on the stage, and they finished up the show. It was
awesome to realize we were listening to two such talented Hawaiian
performers. Thanks so much to you and irh.com for providing the information
about their mainland tour! It was a wonderful opportunity, and we
thoroughly enjoyed the evening with Led and Cyril. They really put the
"Music" in "Music City" that evening!
