Led Kaapana & Cyril Pahinui - Mainland Tour '01
Patricia Hardin saw Led & Cyril at the beginning of their tour on July 10th.

Rabb, Here's a July 11 review I sent an Hawaiian music newsgroup the day after I saw Cyril and Led in Seattle July 10.
It was the beginning, but not the first stop on their tour. Still get mellowed out just thinking about the whole pleasant evening!   My oh my oh my it was just perfect. I'm still in a perfect mood ofmellow humming at work playing new CD at lunch - an evening oflive music just doesn't get any better than what we got last night at the Century Ballroom in Seattle listening to Cyril Pahinui and Ledward Kaapana. First was Cyril's set If you have any of his CD's, he sang all the best. I got goose bumps when he did such a soulful Hi'ilawe long and slow....WOW and WOW can he play guitar!!!... so rich and mellow and tuned so neat he can have one hand on his knee while he strums a complicated beautiful riff with only the other hand on the strings....how does he dothat. He joked he was sorry to keep us all from the All-Star game ".....but hey, we all-stars too"!!
After a break so all could stretch legs (Cyril signed autographs during this time), Led ward came on. What can I say ..... every note was perfect......what guitarmanship...it was magic....my favorite was Radio Hula.....but shoot then that sounds like the others were something less......NOT.......they were all my favorites while he was playing them......his falsetto was so soft and mellow and true......goose bumps again.
(Hawaiian angels were watching after daughter and I last night.....we randomly chose two seats in the back row......behind us the aisle-way, then other seats right in front of the open windows.....guess who sat behind us during Cyril's set......yep....Led.....he giggled and joked during most of Cyril's set, but would stop and listen during favorites just like the rest of us fans. While Led was on, Cyril, now sitting behind us, would actually sing along softly with Ledward during parts of the song.....more goose bumps.....it was just so sweet and nice to hear them both in a kind of stereo).
The last set was both together..........shoot.....it felt like backyard.....only I've never been to a Hawaiian backyard sing. They both showed their respect and love for the other musically by just kicking back and making more beautiful music...I can't tell you how nice it was.Wish I weren't so half dead tired today from being up so late....long drive home from Seattle back down to Olympia......I'd hop in the car and drive down to Portland and listen to the whole thing all over again. If you are anywhere near their next stop be SURE to try and see this.......its just magic.
