Windward Triathlon

by ......

The Windward Triathlon will be holding its 13th annual event August 13. This race has participants not only from Hawaii and the mainland but all over the world because it is a qualifier for the Ironman race in Kona. Unlike the Tinman triathlon which is considered a "peoples race" the Windward Triathlon is highly competitive and not an event for the weekend athlete.

The Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station hosts the Windward Triathlon which begins with a one mile swim in Kaneohe Bay. Competitors then begin a difficult 50 mile bike ride, which is immediately followed by a hot 10 mile run. This elite field numbers approximately 300 individuals.

The race begins at 6:15 am and folks in Waimanalo should see the first bikers entering Kumuhau Street about 7 am. Bikers cannot draft and because the field is relatively small there are not large groups riding together. This is aggressively enforced by draft course marshals monitoring the course. There are also course monitors at all corners and policeman stationed on Kalanianaole Highway where bikers enter and exit the back roads. Most bikers will have completed the out and back portion through Waimanalo by 10 am.

The Windward Triathlon wants to be a welcomed event, not just to the athletes who tremendously enjoy an opportunity to compete at this level, but to the communities this race touches. We encourage and appreciate any cheering and aloha you can give to these top athletes as they pass through your neighborhoods.
