Members of our Waimanalo fishing community met with Bill Devick, the Program Manager of Recreational Fisheries, to express their concerns about fishing in Waimanalo Waters. One of the major issues discussed was the improper use of gill nets--setting the nets out for long periods at night and/or using nets with small eyes. The alarming reduction of the fish population indicates that we need to rethink our fishing practices if we want to continue to enjoy fishing in the years ahead.
The community is encouraged to notify DLNR's (Department of Land and Natural Resources) hotline whenever they see any illegal fishing practices. Call the community hotline each time you notice a humbug in our ocean. The number is 587-0077 and is monitored 24 hours a day (leave a message if you get the answering machine).
Fish are a renewable resource, if we take only what we need for today, and allow the keiki to swim free, to be caught another day.
Happy fishing and Happy New Year!!!
Aloha,
