Waimanalo Chronicle News
by Lei Cunningham
While other students and teachers were taking full advantage of recess and enjoying their spring break, two determined teachers were at school with eighteen of their equally determined students.
Seventh grade students, under the direction of their English teacher Mrs. Pua Higa, and their Social Studies teacher Mrs. Lei Cunningham, were finishing up their third quarter projects: newspaper articles about people, events, and things that existed during the reign of Hawai'i's third monarch, King Kauikeaouli, Kamehameha III. Students were assigned to write political, economic, aesthetic and social articles, using the "world cultures model" to write newspapers.
Students learned to work cooperatively in groups, the social studies content, to use the computer to word process articles, to make charts, crosswords, and comic strips, and the importance of deadlines and organization skills.
The teachers would like to acknowledge: Mrs. Marian Holokai, Principal of Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School, for writing the grant proposal for us and encouraging us to holomua (progress); and Lois Mui, D.O.E. Curriculum Specialist for awarding us a grant, without which we might not be able to get our students' work printed.
110 students were involved in this newspaper project. These articles are a small sampling of the "fruits of their labor" (they used Apple-MacIntosh computers). We tried to represent each class and hope that this project has a long lasting affect on our students. The teachers will reminisce about this project in the future.
