Hey Grape Jammers...welcome to an odd assortment of

Memories: This is a piece of personal history. It's a radio announcement card for KPIG FM, now I-94 FM.

I was flown into town to put this rock n' roll station on the air with a bunch of other east coast jocks in January 1979. In fact tonight, January 15th, 1995 (as I put this page together) is an anniversary. I smelled paradise from the baggage claim at 11:16 p.m., Hawaii Standard Time, felt the balmy breezes and sighed the contented sigh of being home.

We ended up being forced into playing disco, some of which (don't tell anyone I wrote this) actually turned out to be ok.

People in the islands dug it and the club scene here was doin' it full bore. One of my all time favorite songs came out during that period: "Tahiti Tahiti" by a techno dance band called Voyage. We also played a lot of reggae extended plays like "Now That We've Found Love" by Third World. That one still knocks me out. During that stretch I also became a fan of Paulino DeCosta, an amazing percussionist from Brazil.

Among the clubs that have long sinced passed was the Marrakesh down in Waikiki....I'll never forget walking thru the front door only to see a woman swinging on a swing with ropes wrapped in vines, in the big middle room...

As I sighed in baggage claim, I knew I'd be here forever. Most everyone I came with fled within' the first six months. Some could not take the heat, some missed their mommies, others had allergies or major ambitions. Out of the original 7, only myself and Austin Vali remain. Austin and his wife own KRTR FM Radio and I own the H-4 "AM&FM" Internet Sites...it took me longer cause the technology hadn't been invented for a while but, here we are!

Incidentally, the KPIG call letters now belong to a station up in Northern California somewhere...I wrote them once to say hello but they never wrote back...so much for radio friendliness eh?
