U.H. Coach Wagner's Firing: An act with "No Class"...

The administration of the University of Hawai`i showed itself to be an act with absolutely no class this past week. Hugh Yoshida's firing of Bob Wagner and staff before the last game of the Rainbow's Season was abrupt and disgracefully handled.

To make matters worse... Yoshida, Mortimer and their high mucka muck cronies also chose to penalize the team and graduating Seniors by cancelling the yearly Football Banquet.

Sorry Hugh, you 'n Mortie really came out of this whole mess with mud on your face and from here it looks like permanent mud.

Bob and his staff all know that coaching is a lot like being in show business and that getting fired is just another part of the biz. (In radio we used to tell the newbies that you hadn't lost your "virginity" until you were fired at least once...and guys like Lee Baby Simms actually seemed to get an odd feeling of pride by being fired by more radio stations than anyone else.)

Seems there's always one guy with no talent who gets to do the firing too and Yoshida comes across like the biggest loser in this whole sad affair with Mortie running a close second. I mean even radio station program directors (among the sleaziest of humans) had the courtesy to fire you and mean it...Once you were fired, you left, you didn't have to hang around and do another show, or in Bob Wagner's case, coach another game, or sit through a disgracefully produced, mockery of a press conference.

Tonight the Bows ended their season. They lost 24-20 to Oklahoma State. This year's record ends at 4 and 8 and the seniors' walk was even more bittersweet by virtue of the fact that the Annual Football Banquet was cancelled. Why cancelled? Many of us are still scratchin' our heads over that one.

Seems like Scrooge is alive and well at the University of Hawai`i and I bet if pressed for an answer, Mortie will blame budget cuts.

A much better way of handling this whole sad affair would've been to let Wags and his staff finish the year without the blessed extra pressure and messy emotionalism of a knee jerk decision by the U. H. Administration. Sure, make a change but, exhibit some class. They should've let the whole season and the banquet run their course and then in a more dignified, less public manner drop the axe and get on with new business as far as Rainbow Football is concerned.

Wags and his staff are pros. Their firings will bring out the survival instinct in all of them and they'll undoubtedly become better people for the experience.

If I was a rich man (and I am far from it), I'd throw the Football Banquet myself...maybe one of our hotels or a Bishop Estate Trustee might do the honors (and don't invite Yoshida or Mortie)..

Nuff said.
Just one man's opinion.
