A Trip To Waimanu Valley

Waimanu Valley is located in a very remote part of the Northeastern end of the Big Island. The valley is a prime example of a lush, green ecosystem. The only way to get into Waimanu Valley is by hiking. To get there one must first go down Waipio Valley, located at the end of route 24, 9.5 miles north of Honokaa town. Access to Waipio Valley is by 4 wheel drive vehicle only. Once you get down to the valley floor, you must hike to the northwestern corner of the valley where you then take the zigzag trail up the western valley wall. The trail leads into Waimanu Valley once you reach the top.

Sammie Pung, an avid photographer and videographer recently went on this long and scenic hike to Waimanu Valley with friends Lars Bergknut and Imai Namahoe. As an occasional web surfer who has visited Hawaii¹s H4 from his workstation at the NASA Infrared Telescope facility on top of Mauna Kea Mountain, Sammie has decided to share his photos of this lush valley with the world.
