View of the Italian base from the front of the recreational house (wooden building). I participated in the 1997-98 campaign to complete a research project in geodesy, regarding the geodynamics acivity of the area. The area had beeen selected for the base because it is formed by granite rock (stable) and its deglaced for most of the antarctic year. Moreover it is close to the sea permitting the easy access to the expedition's ships.

The pack thickness in the bay allows its usage as a landing ground for the C130 planes that are used as cargo transport or for transportiation of the expeditioners.

In the very back of the base you can see mount Melbourne volcano, and on the right side of it the Campbell ice tongue extending itself over the sea.
