Rockin' the Wave.
Photographed at Wave Rock, near Hyden in Western Australia at 11.00 am local time on Friday 20th March for the Global Wave Shoot.
Location Notes:
Wave Rock is part of a granite monolith near the wheat belt town of Hyden. [Elevation 302m ASL, annual rainfall 325 mm, pop 500]. The process of weathering has left a 15 m high "wave" shape, with coloured streaks down the face of the wave.
Our three boys surfed the wave, but at 11.00 am the rock heated up very quickly so they surfed with bare feet at one end and sandals on at the other. As is common in most parts of the Australian bush, there were flies about, but none landed on the lens! [This has happened before!] The weather was hot and clear [about 32 degrees C], with a lazy breeze idling through the scrub, crows cawing, and kids talking.
Technical details:
Canon EOS 620 with Kodacolor Gold III 400 ASA. 17-35mm rectilinear zoom lens set at 20 mm. Aperture f13, auto exposure 1/60 to 1/500 sec. Self-made pano head based mostly on Manfrotto bits. Images scanned from prints and stitched in QTVR Authoring Studio on a Power Tower Pro 250 MHz Macintosh clone running MacOS8.1.
