This image was shot at 2:00 PM PST with a 35mm camera and 70mm lens. I was standing on the hummocks looking across the pumice plain at the crater. The hummocks are the material that used to fill the crater. When Mt. St. Helens erupted on May 18th 1980 this material filled the Toutle River Valley floor. This is evident when you look at the mountains on the other side of the valley. At the far end of the valley you can see a stand of trees on the ridge that was laid flat during the initial blast. Flora and fauna and wildlife have returned to this area. A herd of elk lives here and beavers create damns to make ponds, and on this day I saw a pack of coyotes. You can hear frog's singing to their hart's content from the pond you see before you. In late July early August the terrain is filled with wild flowers.
