On May 18th 1980 Mt. St. Helens was transformed from a rounded top mountain to what you see here. This image was shot at 11:00 AM PST on March 20th 1998 with a Minolta RD175 digital camera and a 28mm lens near the Johnston Ridge Observatory witch you can see on the ridge near by. This is the closest vantage point to the crater (5 mi.) you can reach by road. Spirit Lake is visible to the left of the mountain. The Toutle River runs through the pumice plane down the Toutle River Valley carrying sediment down river. Wildlife has returned with raccoons, coyotes, porcupines, beaver, mink, bear, white tail deer and elk making this their home.
