This is a view of Philip Houde's bison farm in Baie St. Paul, Manitoba. These powerful creatures are the official symbol of our province, Manitoba, and a reminder of the western plains as they once were. Herds of thousands, even millions of bison used to roam the prairies, affecting every other aspect of the ecology.

I wasn't sure what kind of reception I'd get, dropping in un-announced and asking permission to photograph. Philip not only kindly allowed me to photograph his animals, but went into the paddock with a bucket of feed and called the animals over.

The bison were relatively calm, occasionally jostling each other while trying to get at the feed on the ground. All the animals stayed out ofthe way of Buddy, the oldest bull. Philip tells me that they can be unpredictable, like 'Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde,' the whole group suddenly breaking into a fast run back and forth across the paddock or out in their field. The electrified fence in front of me is a reminder of their mass and strength.

Shot with a Nikon FE2 and a 28 mm Nikkor-H f3.5 lens, using Agfa Optima 100 film. The camera was mounted on a Kaidan Kiwi panoramic head and Manfrotto tripod. Film was developed and transferred to Photo CD. The panorama was stitched and corrected using Apple QuickTime VR Authoring Studio, Adobe Photoshop and SumWare ConVRter Pro.
